Christmas for the Kids

My wife and I Live in the Cusco region and regularly make trips through the smaller andean villages, either when we are doing tours with guests, or on our own just exploring. Every year around Christmas time I have noticed that different groups will provide Christmas gifts to the children in some of the medium sized towns, but the smaller and more isolated villages seem to get left out.
I have decided that I would like to try and fill this gap a bit, but not just by providing toys, as is the common practice, but other supplies as well. My plan is to collect money throughout the year and around October, start purchasing the supplies to be passed out close to Christmas.
Some of the items that I am planning on purchasing are backpacks, school supplies and personal hygiene supplies (like tooth brushes and toot paste), and at least one toy. I have some research to do to try and determine what items might be the best things to include, but vitamin supplements might also be included.
The kids in many of these communities often times have long walks to get to school, if they even attend school, so at the very least the backpacks would be appreciated, and my hope is to not only put a smile on the kids faces and help them to have a merry Christmas, but also to provide some things that might improve their lives a bit.
My goal is to be able to purchase 200 backpacks (100 boys & 100 Girls) and fill them with supplies for the kids, if donations exceed my goals, then we will purchase as many additional backpacks and supplies as we can, so that we can spread Christmas joy to as many kids as possible.
During the course of the year I will work on the exact cost and list for the backpacks, and will update this page as I go, and after we pass out the backpack to the kids, pictures will be posted here as well as on our Facebook page.
