My brother Chris has always lived life to the full. He loves a challenge; he was a wind-surfing pro, #1 kite-surfer in Britain, a helicopter pilot and now a yacht master. But now Chris is facing the challenge of his life: a pancreatic cancer diagnosis that could take his life within a year.
Chris is adventurous, always pushing himself to the limits, with an insatiable appetite for life. To top that off, in 2014 he and his wife started a family. My gorgeous niece is 5, and her adorable brother is just 19 months old. You can imagine how stunned we all are. The dreams of my brother and his beautiful family have come to a shocking halt. Their world has been completely turned upside down by this devastating news.
Chris' only medical option, according to his oncologist, is to take chemotherapy offered through the UK's National Health Service (NHS). These medicines, as you know, are terribly toxic and may extend his life by a few months. His reduced quality of life would be difficult not just for him, but for his entire family.
After extensive research, Chris has decided to forego chemotherapy and pursue other treatment options. He has been accepted on The Gonzalez Protocol which has a record of being the only treatment globally with long term survivors of pancreatic cancer. This protocol involves taking very large daily doses of pancreatic enzymes combined with an individualised diet and detoxification procedures. He is under the care of the leading expert in this approach who is based in NYC. Chris believes this path will allow him to live a longer, better quality life than he would have under chemo. However, this protocol is not covered by the NHS. Initial costs have been over £12,000 and the ongoing treatment and consultations cost £1500 a month.
