Chris Escalante Medical Fund

Hi everyone! I’m creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my boyfriend, Chris Escalante. On April 5th, 2019 he woke up with severe abdominal pain from out of nowhere. After attempting to go to his job at KU in Lawrence, KS he found himself in a meeting with the pain quickly getting worse. He managed to drive himself back to Topeka and I rushed him to Tallgrass Immediate Care where we were then sent to the ER at St. Francis (AKA University of Kansas Medical Center Topeka). It was there that he was diagnosed with Pancreatitis and admitted into the hospital for IV fluids as well as pain management. Four days later he was discharged and we were told that we would need to go see a specialist at KU Med in Kansas City to have a stone removed that was stuck in his Cystic Duct and causing the Pancreatitis.
After a month of waiting we made the trip to Kansas City on May 28th to have the stone removed and resume our normal life- or so we thought...
Unfortunately the procedure was unsuccessful, they couldn’t remove the stone and Chris was sent home to recover then follow up with the original doctor from St. Francis to determine another plan. Little did we know that things were about to go horribly wrong. As the day progressed Chris continued to complain of extreme pain and nausea then the next day when he couldn’t eat at all it became clear to me that something was very wrong. After calling KU Med and being told to get him to an ER immediately I rushed him to Stormont-Vail in hopes of maybe getting a second opinion. Concerned that it could be Post-Procedural Pancreatitis they admitted him into the hospital Wednesday night. Yet again, we found ourselves back in the hospital. On Thursday we met a new GI doctor and were told that while he wasn’t sure what was causing Chris’ pain they would do their best to manage it then he would be able to go home. Just a few hours later, while in the shower, Chris lost consciousness. As I was grabbing clothes for him out of the bag we were living out of, he started hollering for me and saying the room was going black. I ran in there and before I knew it, my boyfriend went unconscious right before my eyes. I caught him before he hit the floor and I started screaming for help. After the nurses came running in and called the rapid response team, they performed a series of tests and discovered that he was bleeding internally. Over the course of the next five days he received two separate blood transfusions, had another procedure done to confirm that the bleed was finally done, and found out that the procedure done at KU Med the week before was not only unsuccessful but caused severe complications and wasn’t even necessary in the first place. A week later he is out of the hospital and is finally home!
Considering that only days before, he lost consciousness right in front of me and the doctors told me my boyfriend was “very critically ill” I’m ecstatic to have him home!
However, life expenses unfortunately do not stop due to health issues. With medical bills already being in the THOUSANDS, day-to-day expenses still being present, having been terminated from one of his two jobs due to this long health battle, both of us missing time from work, and him not being in any condition to get another job the financial burden is very much present. Chris has ALWAYS done for others and gone above and beyond without asking for anything in return. He absolutely does not deserve the hardship that life has thrown at him lately and any help would be much appreciated! As always, thank you for all of the love and support!
