Chop the Mop

When I was a little boy, about 6 years old, I used to sit there and beg my mom to cut my hair short. You see at that age I had one of the most premier bowl cuts on the playground. While other boys were looking fast and sleek with these tiny buzz cuts, my hair, in all of its blonde glory, was in many ways a mushroom cap atop my head. Albeit an adorable haircut that brings a great big smile to my face upon looking back at it, at the time, it just had to go. I wanted to be like everyone else with a buzz and so finally, right before the second grade started, my mother let me get a buzz and no one recognized me on the first day of school. 


Fast forward 20 years later, and currently we have a complete role reversal. Now it's my mom begging me everyday to cut my hair, and myself growing it out without a care in the world. In some ways, I'll even admit I'm trying to stand out from the everyday norm that is the short male haircut; that which I always dreamed of having as a kid. That or I've been too lazy to get a haircut for the past 2 years, but I don't really buy that because having long hair is a pain in the ass! 

So, the time has finally come after a legitimate two full years of not a single pair of scissors or clippers touching my hair, to tame the beast. While my mother and I could argue for hours about the length of my hair, there's definitely one thing we've always been on the same page about, and that is the support and funding of cancer patients and research. This is why I will be shaving my head and donating my hair in a few weeks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths - a great program that takes real hair donations and turns them into wigs to help women battling cancer.


In addition to donating my hair, I am also looking to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The NBCF helps educate women around the world about breast cancer and even provides free mammograms to those in need. This cause holds a special place in my heart as my mother is a breast cancer survivor, and therefore I have witnessed first hand how difficult the long road to recovery from the disease can be. 

Please join me in my fundraising goal of $1,000 for the NBCF! Even the smallest amount goes a long way! I too will be donating alongside all donors, but with a little twist. Having not cut my hair for the last 24 months, I reckon I've saved around $40 a month not getting haircuts during that time. Therefore, I am going to match all donations to this campaign, dollar for dollar, up to $1,000.
