Chiltern Cheetahs Gym Facilities

Cheerleading is a highly athletic sporting activity now in the process of gaining full recognition by the International Olympics Committee and Sport England as a separate sporting entity.  It has a highly gymnastic based element, often attracting those who have peaked in gymnastics competition, and appeals to both males and females throughout school to beyond university leaving age. Cheerleading is tainted by the perception of Cheer Dance teams and pom pom shaking, however, as a sport it is the athletic and energetic performance of stunts, tumbles, jumps and dance as a team.  It requires individual development of stamina, flexibility and strength, progressive sport specific techniques, performance skills, interdependence to succeed as part of a team and harmonises individual strengths to accommodate different abilities and preferences.

Chiltern Cheetahs was started by ex Beaconsfield High School pupil Jessica Goodall, purely out of passion and enthusiasm for the sport and the Mayor of High Wycombe recently described the dedication, trust and athletic prowess of the children as “overwhelming”.
Chiltern Cheetahs is the largest established Gymnastics Cheerleading Squad in Buckinghamshire and draws members from the whole of South Buckinghamshire and beyond.  The club caters for All-Star Competitive Cheer, Recreation only Cheer, Stunt teams and competitive dance teams with a highly acro-aerobic focus.  There is also building participation from boys wishing to develop tumbling or parkour skills.    The majority of members who enroll for leisure build confidence and choose to audition for a place on one of 11 competitive teams that compete at Regional, National and International Competitions.  The club also provides extra training for school gym squad participants competing at national level.

The club’s belief is that cheerleading at an early age, like gymnastics, develops the physical dexterity that forms the basis for success in a number of sporting activities.  The highly competitive nature of the sport during the 5 – 12 age range develops a range of life skills building confidence, resilience, team-working and tenacity.  Experiencing team support when dealing with setbacks and hard won success is the best way to ensure continued participation in sport past the vital drop off period in early adolescence.   Cheerleading seems to “buck the trend” with regard to female participation drop off due to gender mixed team participation and an ability to overcome the negative feminine sports participation concerns cited by young girls as reasons for dropout.

Being situated in the green belt and most expensive real estate area in the UK has led to the Club being severely penalised in its ability to secure the facilities required to compete with teams outside the M25 perimeter. The specialised and extensive sprung floor required for training requires a permanent substantial square footage and commercial properties secured by other Clubs are unaffordable if the Club is to remain open to all on a community basis. The athletes therefore have been training  on an inferior basis to their competitors and despite this, their determination and commitment has led to the following success:

·      Growth from 15 to 215 athletes aged 3-25 in 5 years purely by word of mouth.  Expansion continues on a month by month basis

·      Development of 16 coaches with cheerleading, gymnastics and dance professionals, some qualified to degree level in teaching, dance and sports management.

·      Increasing competition success which this year included:

·      A 1st place title for youth 1, junior 2, junior 3 teams.

·      A Grand Champion title for the Junior Level 3 team and our Junior Level 3 Stunt Group for highest scores of the whole competition.

·      A 2nd place for the Tiny, Mini, Youth 1, Junior 1, Senior 4 teams.

·      1st place at National final competitions in July 2017 for The Senior Level 4 stunt group, Youth level 3 stunt group and Junior Level 4 stunt group.

·      Increased participation in dance classes with results continuing to rise.

·      100% retention of year one athletes who continue to learn, grow and experience success.

The Club has recently partnered with Beaconsfiled High School
with the aim that sharing and developing joint resources for school and out of hours activities can provide a sustainable, stable and economically beneficial partnership for both parties.   The intention is that both parties will work collaboratively and openly to achieve both the school and Club objectives and a two year hire agreement is  the initial step towards a long term  relationship .  During this time, joint funding and fund raising initiatives will be explored and conducted in partnership with the aim of increasing the quantity and quality of dance, drama and  gym facilities for both parties.

Beaconsfield High School presently has limited provision for the teaching and performance of drama and is seeking to work jointly with Chiltern Cheetahs to enable the expansion of its current facilities to enable the creation of enhanced  performing arts facilities, which can be used for drama, cheerleading, dance and gymnastics.  This may include the improvement of current facilities as well as new construction.  In order that more detailed designs and costings for new facilities can be prepared, the school proposes to appoint Munday & Cramer, Architectural & Building Surveyors, who have worked with the school on several other major building projects, to prepare feasibility designs and costings. The school and Chiltern Cheetahs will work together to provide a design brief for the feasibility.  The cost of this work is £5,070 which will be shared 50:50 between the school and Chiltern Cheetahs.

Subject to a successful feasibility study Chiltern Cheetahs will work with the school to raise the funds to build the facility thus ensuring the sustainability of the club's facilities.  In the event the feasibility study is unsuccessful, then any funds raised will be used to secure an alternative facility.

The Club is therefore currently seeking funding to:

a) £4000 to equip the current gym (£26000 has already been assigned)
b) Fund its share of the feasibility study
c)  Build funding for a long term facility at Beaconsfield High School or in the event this should not be feasible, another suitable site in the community.
