Chile Homeless Dogs and Cats

My name is Mary Ann and I have lived in Patagonia Chile for the last 18 years. Albeit an amazing place to live, we have a serious problem with stray dogs and cats and people abandoning animals in my town. Most are unfixed females which live on the street, starving and pregnant. Peoples solution here is to kill the dogs and cats and kill the kittens and puppies. It's very sad and very hard because I have asked the local government for help and they have told me no, that it's not a priority, and most people who live in my town are poor and under educated.
Peoples first priority is feeding themselves rather than spaying and neutering their animals. There are people here who want to make better choices about their animals, but, do not have the money to do so. My goal is to raise money to: bring awareness about animal care; education and alternative option living with cats and dogs; give people an alternative solution to killing animals and to give a better life to the dogs and cats living on the street.
I have funded a few spay-a-thons myself with my own personal funds, help of friends, and the support of a friend who is a veterinarian that lives 300 miles away. The funds will be used to host a clinic in my home, pay for the veterinarian’s time and lodging, travel expenses and all the materials needed to spay and neuter all the animals we can round up in the area, vaccinations and worming. If I reach my goal we can accomplish 60 critters this winter! This clinic is also open and free to anyone in the local community as well who may not have the money to spay or neuter their pets, but, would like to participate. Hopefully fixing the female street dogs will increase the possibility that someone will give them a home, too.
We hosted a successful clinic on Saturday, May 19, in my home with the hopes of doing it again in August if the goal is met. I am so grateful that you took the time to read this and appreciate your consideration in this matter.
