The Chicago Student Walkout

Who
?  We are the Chicago Student Walkout reps: a group of Chicago high school students who are organizing a city-wide walkout. We are passionate about changing the current gun control laws in order to prevent gun violence in our own city, and across the nation.

What? We, the students of Chicago, are leading a walkout for all students in Chicago schools to come together and unite against gun violence.

When? April 20th, 2018. It is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.

10:00 AM Individual school walkouts.

11:30 AM Meet at Grant Park.

11:45 AM Speeches, Poetry, and moment of reflection for gun violence victims.

1:00  PM March to City Hall

1:15 PM Protest in front of City Hall

2:30-3:30 ish PM   Head home after a successful day of making change!

Where? We are meeting at Grant Park to rally, share speeches, poems, and personal experiences relating to gun violence. We will then march to city hall and the nearby government buildings.

Why?

We are walking out to show the adults-- the people in "power" that we are the powerful ones. We are standing up to the immense amounts of gun violence and police brutality in our city and our nation. We are enraged that children are still being murdered in their classrooms, 19 years after the Columbine Massacre.   We can't stay silent about these issues, even if we are not personally affected by them. We need change, and we won't wait for it any longer.   We won't allow any more students, any more young, unarmed black and brown men, to be murdered by a gun. We are greatly affected by gun violence and school shootings and we do not accept what is occurring in our city and our nation.  We are walking out because all too often, the voices of students like us go completely unheard, and we must create peaceful disruption to do so. We are walking out because we are the only future America has, and Americans are letting us die.

Where will your kind donation go?
We are completely lead and organized by around 20 Chicago high school students. We have spent hours planning everything- from where, to when, to how. We have a few factors that are imperative to this walkout that we as students, we can not personally afford out of our own pockets. Your donation will go directly to purchasing or renting:

- A stage to be placed in Grant Park for the speeches, poetry, etc.
-Microphones, speakers, and bullhorns to have our voices heard
-  Walkie-talkies for us (the reps) to use to communicate during the rally to ensure that everything is going smoothly and as planned
- Tickets for transportation from schools that are farther away to Grant Park, either by CTA, Metra or other forms of transportation.
- Even though the disruption we are causing is peaceful, there is always the possibility of students getting arrested for this disruption. We saw this occur in the last walkout on the 17th, and we have to prepare for this to happen again. If one gets arrested, we need the funds to be able to bail them out, especially if they cant afford the bail themselves.

By chipping in, even just a little bit, you are helping us to make a change on April 20th, not only for us, but for the nation.

Thank you!
