Chiara's Treatment Appeal
If someone was to tell us a year ago that we would give birth to a beautiful girl, yet would spend our days rehabilitating her as a full-time job, we wouldn’t of believed them. After all, we already had a perfectly healthy 4 year old named Grace. Our family time has been replaced with therapies, specialists, tests, research and over 150 hospital visits to date.
Chiara requires constant assistance in all daily activities: feeding, drinking, dressing and bathing. She relies on us to act as her body, as she is unable to roll, sit, stand or even walk independently. As parents we want to be able to provide her with as much opportunity as possible.
We would like to return to Philadelphia every 6 months for ongoing specialised medical treatment for Chiara, in order to help her reach her highest potential. The program with the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential (IAHP) in Philadelphia has improved the lives of many children with conditions similar to Chiara's. Some children with severe disabilities, like Chiara's, have undertaken this program and have even gone on to study at university. We would also like to access other highly specialised healing modalities, special needs equipment and brain development opportunities.
We are hopeful about the possibilities for Chiara. Funding for the IAHP program is not available from the Australian government.

What a phenomenal fundraising effort reaching $3,569!!
Bec, you officially deserve to enjoy lots of celebratory drinks tonight!
A massive heartfelt thank you to every single person who supported Bec, with her cause to help Chiara. We are extremely grateful for the support and ongoing encouragement.
Here is a look at the special needs equipment we will purchase with the raised funds. Each piece of equipment is posturally supportive and clinically focuses, to assist with Chiara's mobility impairment.
We had a trial of the products below and Chiara absolutely loved each one! The Upsee allowed her to stand upright, and even kick a ball with her big sister Grace. It also allowed her to feel the movement of walking, which she enjoyed so much.
The 3 in 1 Scoot (advanced version), allowed her to scoot around on her tummy, as well as sit and wheel herself around the room in a seated position.
Lastly, the Playpack is a portable device which allows Chiara to enjoy tummy time and sitting, for places and spaces we cannot bring or fit her wheelchair pram.
All of the equipment is so easily transportable which is a huge bonus, as a lot of the equipment at home is extremely heavy not transportable. Chiara relies on us to move, lift, sit, stand and hold her entire body, having this equipment and ease will help Chiara enjoy some independence.
Thank you again for your amazing support.
You can stay connected to Chiara’s Journey and share in her achievements as she continues to defy the odd’s. We have so much more planned for her, in terms of neurological therapies and potential stem cell treatment. We are seeing so much progress - I have a feeling this little lady is going to surprise us all.

Chiara's recent hip surgery went well. Although we all lost a lot of tears, sleep and energy in the process. It's all part of the journey, some months are smooth sailing, others are very challenging.
Chiara is now out of the hip-spika cast, and the next 6 months are crucial for her, in terms of keeping her hips healthy. So we will make sure we keep up to date with all the therapies she needs to stay on track.

As a result, she is now able to travel in a car-seat (without severe physical reactions). She is also able to hold her head up much better, without it dropping forward all the time. Her eye contact has become a lot more purposeful, as she is able to communicate her needs to us, through eye contact.
Chiara is less reactive to sounds, she never used to be able to cope with a sudden sound, such as: a cough, a sneeze, a burst of laughter, a dog-barking, the food-blender etc.
Chiara can now manage motion better i.e: car going over a speed-hump, or just movement in the car alone, elevator or turbulence on a plane. Where, previously she would react with an extremely exaggerated startle reflex, that was debilitating for her.
Her sleep is so much better, both at night and during the day. She is also trying to feed herself food, and using fine motor skills to hold a spoon. Overall, Chiara seems so much more present and her over-reactive nervous system, seems to of calmed down so much.
We are happy with her improvements, however we need to focus on her mobility. At this stage, Chiara is unable to roll, crawl, sit or stand.
We are on mission to try and give Chiara even chance she can, in order to gain independent movement.
We have decided to next attend a 4-week Intensive at The Anat Baniel Method centre, in San Rafael, to further consolidate her gains.
Mobility is our major focus for Chiara in the next 6 months. Here you can find information about the therapy and see the positive gains with children of special needs.
We would be so grateful for any support towards Chiara's ongoing treatment, as well as the adaptive equipment she needs to manage day-today-life.

We will be posting updates from the upcoming 4-week intensive.
Thank you for your support.
