Meet Chewy, an adorable 7-month-old mixed breed dog that was transported to the Fox Valley Humane Association from the Hurricane Harvey disaster area in Texas. This absolute sweetheart arrived at FVHA by plane along with many other dogs as part of FVHA’s partnership in this lifesaving effort, in hopes of finding a new and loving home in Wisconsin. However, upon veterinary examination it was determined that Chewy may have to wait longer than most dogs to find her forever home; this is because Chewy was different than other dogs. It was quickly noted that Chewy had some physical abnormalities by way of genetically malformed genitalia, in such a way that it was causing her to urinate abnormally, and was leading to chronic irritation and scar tissue formation/stricture of the urethra. Chewy went for a consultation with a surgeon at the Fox Valley Animal Referral Center, where concern was raised that if no intervention was performed, her condition may progress to the point where Chewy has very difficult urination vs. inability to urinate. Chewy is in need of a special surgery called a urethrostomy in addition to some reconstructive surgery in order to ensure a good quality of life for Chewy; in fact, this procedure will be life-saving for Chewy.
