Aunt Cheryl

As many of you may know, my God-mother, my Aunt Cheryl, was recently diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. This devastating news has hit our entire family hard. Aunt Cheryl is a rock in our family. She is the person who has always reached out to anyone she felt was in need, even at times, to the point of her own exhaustion. And she does this without complaint and with a truly giving and loving heart

With this diagnosis comes anxiety and pain for her and her family. Physically the tumor has already begun taking its toll on her body, causing great pain and sickness over the last 6 months (or longer). Mentally, she is fearful, but also, empowered by the love and strength of her Savior. She knows that God has a plan for her, and her devotion to this truth will carry her through even the darkest of hours.

Her treatments begin this week (Dec. 6th) and will continue until the tumor can be shrunk enough to be removed. This option alone is a miracle! Uncle Tom will be at her side every step of the way, and many will be holding her in their thoughts and prayers.

Need

She is receiving treatment at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, Illinois. They have been a blessing to her and Uncle Tom with their compassion, care, and knowledge. But this will be a long road for them. While the Center does help provide support, as we all know, a cancer diagnosis is difficult and costly.

Although our whole family, especially her kids and my mom, plan on being there as much as possible for her, Uncle Tom has still had to take a considerable step back from his contract job position, which unfortunately means a loss of income for them. And although Aunt Cheryl is blessed with an employer who is doing all they can to help, medical bills, travel expenses, and other bills are already starting to accumulate.

How we can help

If you are able, please join me in helping to provide support for Aunt Cheryl through this difficult time. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

Another way to help is to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Also, please keep Uncle Tom, and my cousins - Ashley, Marisa, Nick, and Mallory, their spouses, and their kids all in your prayers as well.

I know that Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Tom are so grateful for all your support!

Love and warm wishes,

Brittnee Hathaway

Radiation (written by Uncle Tom):

Friday brought us together with the Radiation Oncologist and his team.  As they explained, they will target the tumor with X-rays.  They will be delivered by a sophisticated computer-controlled machine that will put The Beast precisely in the crosshairs and blast the remainder of those cancerous cells.
We will start the targeting process on Monday with scans to further develop the 3-D model of the tumor, and then start zapping The Beast the following week for about 6 weeks.
Pray for safety as we make a quick run home for the weekend.

The BEAST is Dying!
Journal entry by Tom Elliott — 18 hours ago

The CT scan results today indicate that the tumor is dying and, in fact, the oncologist recommended stopping chemo at this point and starting radiation to shrink The Beast. The surgeon said he doesn't think it is operable, so we meet with the radiation oncologist tomorrow to learn the specifics of the radiation treatments, that may last for 5 or 6 weeks.
She was able to eat with me in the cafeteria today, TWICE! That's a big improvement - in the recent past, she couldn't even stand the smell of the food in the cafeteria, let alone go in and actually eat something.
Pray for continued healing and wisdom.

Another long day (written by Uncle Tom):

Well, we had another long day in the hotel room today, with Cheryl sleeping most of the day, since she got essentially no sleep the night before, due to nausea/heartburn.
We had another quick visit from the nurse out there in Zion area, to drop off some syringes and needles that we needed for today's feeding - she earned her pay this weekend.
Things moved along OK, so we were able get the chemo bag removed, add a Neulasta subcutaneous pump (to help build white blood cells) and get on the road for home.  Made it back in 5-ish hours with a stop at a rest area to hook up Cheryl's feeding bag at the proper time.  Tom is getting to be a real battle-tested medic - improvising when necessary!
Thanks for your prayers, we are hoping that Cheryl is "over the hump" now, with a program figured out and 3 treatments to go.  Pray for continued strength and guidance thru this maze called cancer treatment.

From Uncle Tom:

Cheryl spent the entire day in the hotel room, hooked up to the chemo pump, and has been VERY nauseous all day.  Since we are only a block from CTCA, Tom was able to run over to grab meals.  After some phone calls, we did have a visit from the local nurse for the company that is supplying the TPN.  When we got here and unpacked the TPN bags that we bought from home, to put them in the fridge, we found little vials of multi-vitamins, vitamin C and insulin in the bottom of the box. Evidently we were supposed to be educated on how to administer these things (inject them onto the feeding solution).  The local nurse in Michigan totally dropped the ball on this when she came to the house on Monday, so we had to have a nurse from out here come to the hotel to show us what to do.
Just another indication of how things can get messed up (not what you want in this situation) and why we feel so assured that things will be done right while we are here.
The chemo pump gets removed tomorrow afternoon, and Lord willing, we will be heading straight home after that. Pray for Cheryl's nausea to subside.
