Cheddar's Sheltie Cataract Surgery!

Donation protected
Many of our friends and family know our adorable sheltie Cheddar.  Cheddar was rescued from eastern Georgia about 2 years ago, and while his history is a bit unknown, we think he was about 9-10 years old when we got him.  He has quickly become a cherished member of our family.

He is the most loving, fun and wacky character - and he is such a source of joy in our lives.

As most of you know, Cheddar is also diabetic.  Cheddar has to be on a pretty strict diet  and recieves insulin shots twice a day. Other than that, he has always been a very active, playful and youthful pup.  UNTIL the diabetes caused him to began developing cataracts and sclerosis in both of his eyes.  Over the past 6 months, Cheddar has gone from having some difficulty seeing to being essentially blind.

It has been a difficult process to watch for those of us who love him.  He has run into everything you can think of (walls, cars, people, mailboxes and even a cactus!) Ouch.  He's also hurt his knees and hips falling down stairs, off of beds, sidewalks, ditches - really you name it, he gets hurt on it.  Even though both of his mommies watch him like a hawk, we can't always catch him before he tumbles!

We try to protect him as much as we can - but even when he is not injuring himself,  its very hard for him to run, play and navigate simple things (finding a water bowl when we travel is a big one)  the way that he used to.  His quality of life has changed dramatically as well as his health, because he is not able to be as active as he was.

So we have decided to do something about it! He had a great visit at Blue Pearl Veterinarian Eye Surgeons and he is a great candidate for cataract removal - which means he would have his sight fully restored!  The surgery package involves an exam ($200), the pre-op bloodwork (about $600), managing his diabetes during the surgery, the actual procedure under anesthesia, 3 post-op appointments, and all drops and medications needed afterward (about $3500).

This whole process totals over $4000 in vet bills, which is a huge amount for our family... but we cannot watch him suffer without trying to do something about it.  We are committed to making this happen for him, but any help we can get towards paying for it would be greatly appreciated.  We know he is a charmer and has a big fan club out there.  We are hoping some of the Cheddar lovers (and sheltie lovers in general!) will consider giving a little something towards it.

Thanks so much for helping to meet our goal in helping our precious Cheddar bear.  We love you all! (Cheddar says 'woof'!) Xoxo
