My name is Melina Panagakos and I am a junior at Chatham High School working towards my Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is a community service project that addresses an issue seen in communities and then takes action in a way to improve that issue while leaving a global impact.
For my project, I decided to address the issue of lack of emergency response knowledge in communities. More specifically, the lack of preparedness in case of an emergency bleeding situation. In recent months and years there has been more and more instances where if people had knowledge on how to properly use bleeding control tools, lives could have been saved. I have made it my goal to teach members of the community on how to properly use tourniquets and other bleeding control tools so that they will be prepared if a situation ever arose where medical action was needed.
For each project there is an advisor, mine being Tim Brown from the Chatham Emergency Squad. I have done a training course with him, and have been certified on bleeding control techniques. This was an important step in my project, for I plan on holding bleeding control training classes within Chatham, and in the schools.
Along with these classes, my project involves putting bleeding control kits into every school so that the proper necessities are available if an emergency were to arise. The kits are quite expensive, ranging from $40-$140 dollars each. To make the schools safer I ideally would like to put multiple in each school which means that the cost of them combined would be quite high.
Any donation would be greatly appreciated to work towards making our schools safer!
