Charlene has been blessed and was chosen to receive a kidney!
Charlene lives in Boston and works as a social worker providing support to victims of crimes. She was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 17. Lupus is autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack tissues and organs. Charlene has had many challenges with her disease, but is committed to living the best possible life she can.
In Dec 2015 Charlene was diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) as a result of the lupus. It came as a shock because she has always been vigilant about taking care of herself. Charlene knew that kidney disease could come one day, but not so early. After the ESKD diagnosis Charlene began dialysis and registered on the kidney transplant list. Dialysis has not been easy, but it has allowed her to continue to do the things she enjoys such as work, volunteer with the Urban League, travel and spend time with family.
Charlene has often been asked how do you manage everything?" To that she says “I have seen the worst, and I feel lucky and blessed to be here.” Charlene lost her twin sister to complications of lupus at the age 27. This was extremely devastating for her family. She is committed to living her life to the fullest and not letting anything stand in her way.
The operation has happened and she will need to stay in Vermont for at least 6 - 8 weeks. This stay will be extremely expensive as it will require a lengthy stay at an area hotel for her and for her family, which will be with her on a rotating schedule while she recovers.
The money raised through this campaign will go towards the cost of the hotel room, travel and other related expenses during her recovery.
