Tauxemont Cooperative Preschool has been providing high quality early childhood education to the Fort Hunt and surrounding communities since 1942.
Our unique, cooperative model and natural woodland setting serve as the foundation of our program. We have a strong tradition of honoring, respecting and enhancing the unique, but very brief, period of life in early childhood that sets the foundation for future success. We know that young children learn differently from older children and believe children develop best and reach their highest potential through exploration, hands-on learning, and open-ended play. We utilize our natural setting and access to the outdoors to provide experiences that help children develop socially and emotionally in language, literacy, and cognitive skills. Our custom curriculum celebrates and nurtures nature, kindness, community, curiosity, self-worth, and a love of learning.
Though we consistently fill our half-day classes for children ages 2.5-6 each year, the number one reason families choose not to attend Tauxemont is their need for full-day childcare. In our modern world, it is no secret that childcare is a national crisis and parents are spread thin. Due to the space constraints of our two classrooms, we are unable to offer extended care for our current students or the full-day programs many area families seek.
We recently learned of a unique opportunity to purchase the property at the end of the Tauxemont Cooperative Preschool driveway. This one acre property abuts our current school grounds and presents an opportunity for us to expand our early childhood offerings to the community, preserve the natural woodland setting, and contribute to the preservation of the natural spring that runs through this property and flows into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
We're very rapidly raising money to purchase the property so that we can expand our early childhood education programs and provide more value to the community. Donations will be used to support the closing costs and monthly mortgage payments while we get up and running as an expanded and improved early childhood center. As a non-profit run by volunteer parents for 80 years, this is a massive undertaking that we are excited to pursue. But we need your help!
Our little school in the woods is unique precisely because of the size of its large classrooms and age-appropriate playgrounds. Acquiring the property at the bottom of the hill would give us over two acres of land total to create more natural, wooded play spaces, more age-appropriate classrooms, and an amazing daycare environment. Our highly-qualified teaching staff, state-licensed, and National Association of the Education of Young Children-accredited program make us uniquely qualified to expand into offering full-day childcare options parents can not only trust, but truly love.
We truly adore our current school and want to remain there as long as possible; however, we’re aware that in order to continue meeting the needs of families today, we have to adapt and expand. If we are unable to purchase the property at the bottom of the hill, the equity we raise through this fundraiser will go towards expansion and improvement of the school. We’ve identified other potential avenues for expansion that allow us to continue honoring our core values while meeting the modern needs of families in our community.
We truly appreciate your willingness to help support the expansion of high-quality early childhood education and care in our community. We know firsthand that when families feel supported, everyone—children, parents, and the community at large—thrives. Any amount you are able to contribute helps ensure we secure the loans needed to make this dream possible.
Please share this fundraiser with all your communities so that we can reach as many people as possible.
If you’d like to discuss direct tax-deductible contributions, please contact us.
From the bottom of our hearts—the parents and the children—thank you for your support.
