Great Dog Rescue NE

Over the weekend, Great Dog Rescue NE took in a 7 week old chihuahua mix named Joey. He was one of a litter of 9, but he was born different from the others. Joey’s front legs didn’t form correctly, leaving him with one working short leg, and one small leg that folds in on itself that he doesn’t seem to have much control over. His owners reached out to Great Dog early on, knowing they didn’t have the finances or ability to give him the long term support he would need. They loved him, kept him safe, and let him go when the time was right. 

Since entering foster care with Great Dog, Joey has been seen by a veterinarian who has started planning for what she sees to be a bright future. He has gotten the basic vetting needed for his age, but as he grows will need radiographs to get an inside look at his skeletal structure and internal organs. He may need amputation of the leg that at the moment does not seem to be of much use to him. Right now, he uses his back legs and chin to scoot, and his nubby leg to climb and maneuver, so a front end custom wheelchair will be necessary for him in the future. Physical therapy, as well as any additional treatment deemed necessary will be options for Joey with your help. 

For now, Joey is enjoying life in his foster home. The 2.5 year old little girl is smitten and refers to him as her “baby puppy”. Equally as smitten is the 80lbs, eight month old German Shepherd puppy, who likes to lay by Joey’s crate, their noses touching through the bars. With Joey at .9lbs, it is quite the sight to behold. Joey is adorable and feisty, loves to “wrestle” with hands and makes the cutest noises. His tiny tail wags when he interacts with his foster humans. He is the cutest little thing, and he deserves every opportunity in life. 

Joey may be small, but he is mighty. This little guy got off to a rough start, but with your help, Great Dog will see that his future is full and bright.

Stormie, a current Great Dog Rescue NE resident, sadly had to retire early from her blossoming NFL career due to a torn ACL and is in need of a TPLO surgery. A TPLO, or tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy, is a surgery that stabilizes the stifle joint after it is torn. With a torn ACL, Stormie is on evercise restriction and daily pain medication. This surgery is highly successful and will allow her to have an active, pain free life. The surgery is expensive and with blood work, x-rays, and rechecks it will cost around $4000. As a non-profit we unfortunately have limited funds and are in need or your help.

 

Stormie, a 2 year old American Bulldog mix, was found down south abandoned, scarred and pregnant. She was brought up to New England where she gave birth to 10 puppies. She was a wonderful mom to them, and is now currently living with her foster family. Stormie is a sweet lady who can be a little rough around the edges due to her difficult past. While waiting to find her forever family she has made so much progress with her foster family and is continuing to improve each day. She is such a loving, funny, intelligent, playful member of the Great Dog Rescue Family and deserves a pain free life.

 

All the money raised will go towards her surgery and recovery. We are so thankful and appreciative of any amount you can give, no amount is too small, and I know she is thankful too!

Help save the dogs of Puerto Rico from the earthquakes

My name is Emma and I am 9 years old.  I really need your help.  Puerto Rico has had some really bad earthquakes and they are going to be getting even more over the next few months.  People are leaving the island, andleaving their dogs behind.  People’s houses are being ruined and they are sleeping in tents or their cars and they are just leaving their dogs alone to die.  Before this, there were really bad things happening with the dogs in Puerto Rico, and now this is going to make it even worse for them.  I wish I could get a job and save all of my money to help, but Im only 9.  I need to ask for everyone’s help.  

Puerto Rico is very special to me.  We adopted 3 special needs dogs from Puerto Rico over the last year.  Their names are Momo, Mita and Bear.  They all had a really hard life in Puerto Rico.  Momo was left behind during Hurricane Maria, and he lost his eye.  He had to live all by himself for a while until he was finally rescued.  Mita was just a baby when some really bad people put acid all over her and her brothers and sisters and burned them really badly.  They were all killed, except Mita lived.  She had burns all over her body, and they had to amputate her leg.  Bear was found in the mountains after a really bad person hit him with a metal pipe and broke his jaw in half and shattered it.  His bottom jaw had to be removed and he still has a hole in the roof of his mouth.  My dogs are the most sweetest and loving and awesome dogs I have ever known.  They changed my whole life.  Now it’s my turn to help their rescuers in Puerto Rico, who have become my family.  I need to help get more dogs off ofthe island to a safer place.  To a home where they will be loved and deserve such a better life.  Their land is collapsing underneath them into the earth and they are really scared.  They have been deserted by their families and left to die alone.  Please please please help me raise some money to help pay for their flights and vet expenses to get them from Puerto Rico to our awesome rescue Great Dog Rescue New England.  They will take such good care of them, and will love them until they find awesome homes for them.  Please help any way you can.  Even if it’s just $1.  Every little bit will help.  These dogs deserve so much more than what they are dealing with.  See the pictures of Momo, Mita and Bear from when they were first found, and now

Great Dog Rescue New England (GDRNE) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit, shelterless, all-breed rescue group headquartered in Massachusetts. Our group is comprised of volunteers from all over New England who love dogs and want to help those that end up homeless through no fault of their own.

Since September 2003 we have placed more than 13,000+ homeless/abandoned dogs in loving forever homes in the New England area, and In 2018 alone our group saved 2146 dogs most of which came from southern high kill shelters. Part of their journey is a state law mandated 48 hour quarantine before they go off to their happy forever lives.

GDRNE maintains a licensed quarantine facility with dedicated staff to provide care and attention to the dogs. While our primary goal is to stay within the letter of the quarantine law, we also provide much needed medical care for those still bearing the emotional and physical scars of their lives prior to rescue. 

It’s a delicate balance between costs of operation and the growing costs to rescue some of the most vulnerable dogs in need. These days we just can’t catch a break between a busted water pipe, our clothes dryer that stopped drying, and an ancient air conditioner that bit the dust... in total about $1500 worth of operating costs!

Please help us to continue to help those who can’t help themselves. Money raised will buy the much needed dryer to have clean bedding for our dogs, a portable air conditioner to keep them cool during the dog days of summer, and repair the leaking water pipe to provide a safe environment. Dear Friends of GDRNE,

As many of you know, Great Dog is a non-profit organization that relies primarily on donations to help our dogs in need. Each year the number of pups we rescue increases and with that come increased medical costs across the board. We’re highlighting one story in particular to showcase the dire need for funds.
 
Mandee is a sweet, two year old hound mix, who was surrendered to GDRNE. On August 24, just an hour after being in her new foster home, Mandee slipped out of the yard and found herself on the run on the Methuen/Lawrence border. Great Dog volunteers partnered with Missing Dogs Massachusetts and began the daunting task of trying to locate Mandee’s whereabouts. After two weeks of running, we received tips that Mandee was seen a mile and a half away. After that, the calls went silent for another two weeks. In those two weeks of silence, the gas explosions and evacuations happened in Lawrence and surrounding areas. Mandee’s sightings were (thankfully) not near those sites, but surely she heard the sounds and saw much of the extra activity. With all of this, no one knew where Mandee would show up next.

It was late one Saturday night that we received our first tip in a new area over three miles away from where she started and by Tuesday night, we had a feeding station and camera set up. At 12:30am, we saw Mandee on camera for the first time. At 5:00am, Mandee’s foster set the safe-trap. By 7:15am and now 32 days after her escape, Mandee was in the trap and safe. Mandee was clearly not putting weight on one of her hind-legs and had abrasions on that same leg. She’d also lost 10 pounds.


And now, we ask for your help. Mandee had her first vet visit on Thursday, September 27. The vet highly suspects that Mandee was hit by a car while on the run through Lawrence. Considering how densely populated the areas Mandee was seen in, this is very likely this is the case. Mandee is booked to undergo FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery next Thursday. We are excited for Mandee to have the surgery and get back on the road to her forever home. Mandee’s surgery is expensive and as mentioned above, we are non-profit and rely on people like you to make a difference.

For every one Mandee, there are more dogs like her with different injuries or ailments, which need your help to get the medical attention they need. On top of the unexpected medical expenses, we have our regular medical costs, such as spay and neuter fees. This is a time where we desperately need your help.
