About Churches United of the Quad City Area
Churches United was founded in 1961 to bring together the Christian churches of Scott County, Iowa, and Rock Island County, Illinois, in order better to express our oneness in Christ and to be able to meet community needs more effectively. We now include 135 churches representing 24 denominations (Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, 22 Protestant varieties) plus 2 independent Pentecostal congregations. We operate a network of 20 Food Pantries and 3 evening Meal Sites; we operate an emergency shelter for women, with or without children, who are homeless or victims of violence; we operate a resale shop which was established to help underwrite the operating costs of the shelter ministry; we network the faith community with the larger community; we advocate for underrepresented groups; we provide services for churches such as a monthly ecumenical newsletter, we also serve as a Religious Information Bureau for the entire area of 400,000 population. All of our programs utilize community volunteers and always need more!
