OUR STORY:

Our family lives about a mile off the Elkhorn river in the Waterloo, Nebraska area. We've seen flooding off the river in the past, but nothing that has reached us. Well the flood from this past week was of historic levels, over 5 feet above the record high, and it flooded our entire property.

Allison and the kids couldn't get back home after the roads from Omaha were closed. However Chad had gotten home sooner and was there to take care of the horses and our home. He stayed up all night Friday night trying to move our personal belongings to higher levels in our house. In the morning as water levels continued to rise it became apparent that we needed to find higher ground for the 8 horses on our property. Fortunately through a friend of ours we found someone who could take the horses to safety as the water levels were rapidly rising to dangerous levels.

Shortly after getting back from relocating the horses the water had reached the first level of our home and was as deep as 4+ feet in some places on our property. Chad was deciding whether he was going to try to ride things out or what he would do now that the horses were safe. Leaving to Omaha was not an option. All roads in and out of the Waterloo area were closed. Access was only available by boat or helicopter. But as he was trying to decide what to do, rescue firemen came by to check in with residents and told him that this was his last chance to evacuate. He took them up on the chance, grabbed our 2 dogs, 1 cat and a few personal items and left our home. They got him on a large military transport vehicle and evacuated him across the Platte river to Yutan. Allison was able to come (thru Ashland) to pick him up and take him back to Omaha to be reunited with the rest of the family!

WHAT WE NEED:

We are very fortunate compared to a lot of other people who had even worse flood damage than us. However we have ton of damage to our property and an unknown amount of damage to our home. Plus we're displaced with no clothes and personal belongings until they re-open roads back from Omaha. Then when we get back home there will be an unknown amount of time and costs for repairs. I'm not sure if we still have power and if food in our fridge and freezers will still be good. I know that our horses' hay got flooded and will need to be replaced. I don't know what insurance will or will not cover.  We do have flood insurance but it is commonly known to have a lot of loopholes to prevent paying out to flood victims. Or it may only cover a limited amount of things on our property.

We have had a lot of very kind friends offering to help out with food, clothes, repairs, etc. It's been frankly overwhelming, thank you! But we're not sure how to coordinate meeting up with those people. And we thought it would simplify things for everyone to help out by opening a GoFundMe account where you can easily give if you wish to. ANY amount raised will help greatly. We do not need to reach the goal of this campaign. A smaller amount will still allow us to buy the food and clothes we will need. More will fund repairs after we get back into our home. We will have a better idea of things that need to be repaired and replaced when the flood waters recede.

CONCLUSION:

Its been a crazy last couple of days for our family. Honestly it's been a crazy past couple of weeks with everything going on with our business closing. There's never a good time for something like this to hit, but we're not in a good position to absorb a disaster like this right now. Thankfully we are all healthy. Our animals are safe. This is bringing our family closer together. And we appreciate all of your thoughts, your prayers, your texts and emails. It's really meant a lot to know so many people care. Anything you would like to give to this GoFundMe drive would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
