Cedar Grove Church Mile of Dollars

Donation protected
Cedar Grove Church, in Miller Co Arkansas, burnt Friday afternoon March 3, 2017.  The fire department was quick to get there but extensive damage was done to the roof and interior.  We need help to restore it back to it’s welcoming self.

Cedar Grove Church and Cemetery was built in 1883 on land from J.T. Morton.  Both the church and the cemetery have deep roots in the family history of the Mortons and Bryants.  Jess Morton married Arlene Bryant Morton, my father's sister.

My father, Baxton Bryant, a Methodist minister, preached his first sermon in this church at age 16.  He is buried at the back door of the church along with my mother and sister.

I am calling this a "Mile of Dollar" fundraising in honor of my father.  In 1950 he burned down his church in Bells, Texas while burning grass.  In an effort to raise money to rebuild, a campaign was started to raise a mile of dollars.  It takes 10,560 one dollar bills to stretch a mile. The fund raiser got national attention and was featured in LIFE magazine in June of 1950.

There are not many places like this.  It is a small little chapel and cemetery nestled in the backwoods of Arkansas. Old family friends, aunts, uncles, and cousins rest in peace there.
