On Jan 11 while working, in California, Cory was robbed at gunpoint. Not only did Cory have to deal with being robbed she was then left to continue working, by herself, for 3 hours after the police left. 3 weeks later on the night of Feb 4 while working in the same store a young man entered the store whom Cory believed was the same young man that held a gun to her weeks before. Cory's co-worker, seeing that Cory was deeply afraid and anxious sent Cory to the back room while the police were called. When the co-worker went to the back room to be with Cory she found her on the floor, in the middle of a stroke. The police arrived and seeing Cory in the condition she was they called for an ambulance.
Cory suffered a deep vein thrombosis (massive stroke). She was on life support for about 2 weeks before transitioning to a traecheotomy. In the couple months that have passed Cory has been moved from an acute care center to a skilled nursing facility. She is paralized on her right side, has a feeding tube because she has been unable to safely swallow (but is finally starting to be fed a little applesauce or yogurt once a day), still has part of her skull removed, can not talk (although starting to say some words) .
Unfortunatley there is no long term or short term disability for Cory, and she did not have a Power of Attorney so we are unable to apply for Social Security, Workmans Comp or even the Victims Compensation Program...she has not income coming in at all. We are looking into applying for a guardianship but since we are in Washington and she is in California it is VERY expensive. Cory's insurance premium has been paid till July 31 and then it's COBRA time... they have been paying for all her medical expenses at this time but it is a week by week basis.. we don't know if one week her insurance will say they won't cover and then its out of pocket..
Our goal is to get her back home to Washington to get her in a facility here but we have no idea when that would be.
By doing this GoFundMe we are hoping there are family, friends and strangers, who will be able to help. All funds raised will go directly toward Cory's medical expenses, future care, and goal to help her become self sufficiant eventually.
