Catherine is Moving to Japan!

Donation protected
My name is Catherine Baty, I am a member of the Big Sandy Rancheria Branch of Western Mono Indians. I spent the first 19 years of my life on the Rancheria. I have been working and going to university for the past four years to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, focusing in Education in Urban Society. After graduating Cum Laude from the University of New Orleans, I applied for a position to teach English in Japan with Interac America, and I received an offer. This is a very exciting time, though I am currently working on my Master’s Degree of Library Science at Texas Woman’s University, this is a wonderful opportunity to add to my resume, and I can continue my studies abroad.

My official start date is March 18th 2018. I am expected at Fukuoka Airport on that date to begin my training as an Interac employee. I will be completely on my own in Japan, assigned to a particular area and a set of schools where I will teach. Though, I have been taking care of myself since I first moved from the Rancheria, I have always had friends for support. This will be the first time in my life I will truly be on my own. So, I’m asking for your support.

Because of the Japanese pay schedule, I will not receive my first pay until I have been there for two months. This means that I need to arrive with enough funds to cover those two months. I also need to cover my travel expenses to get there as well as set-up costs like apartment fees, furniture and household items. Any support would be greatly appreciated, sharing this page is also support!

My goal is $6500. Here is a breakdown of that figure: Plane Ticket - $1200, Travel Expenses - $300, 1st & 2nd Month Expenses - $5000. Though, I understand that monetary support is not always an option, I am grateful for your time and consideration. This is such a wonderful opportunity for me to learn and I can't wait for it to start.
