Carolyn Thomas Documentary 2019

Greetings!

October marks the kickoff of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  It's also the kickoff for a campaign to fund the budget for an update documentary on domestic violence survivor, Carolyn Thomas.

In December of 2003, Carolyn suffered one of the most horrific incidents one could imagine when her abusive boyfriend shot both her and her mother, in her tiny apartment in Waco, Texas and fled the scene leaving them both for dead.  Carolyn was shot at point blank range in the face but was lucky enough to survive.  Her mother, unfortunately, did not.  Carolyn lost 80% of her face from the gun shot blast.  Instead of dwelling on her tragedy, Carolyn used her strength to survive and help others.

Carolyn's story was documented in a one-hour special that aired on the Discovery Health Channel, in 2006, entitled, "Reconstructing Carolyn Thomas".   She also garnered national recognition by appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show twice and on Larry King Live three times.  In addition, Carolyn has appeared on numerous television and news broadcasts and in dozens of magazines including Essence, Jet, OK and Self.

Carolyn has spent that last 15 years of her life spreading her message of hope and courage all over the world.  She continues to do outreach while also dealing with the challenges and limitations inflicted upon her due to her injuries.  Despite her setbacks, she continues to forge ahead with one single-minded goal:  Saving Lives!

My name is Mary Glynn and I am the Producer, Director and Writer of the original Discovery Health documentary special on Carolyn.  I am also a native of Waco, Texas and have remained in close contact with Carolyn over the years.  I also assist Carolyn with her speaking engagements and volunteer for her non-profit foundation, Voices4All.

In light of the continued discussions we are having, at the national level, regarding abuse, force, women's rights and the #metoo movement, Carolyn's story is one that encompasses all of these important issues and her face is one the most recognizable faces in the world when it comes to women's empowerment and survival.

In a few months, Carolyn is scheduled to undergo two major surgeries to replace the original bone and tissue that was used to rebuild her face fifteen years ago.  Her first surgery is scheduled for November of this year, and the second procedure will take place in the Spring of 2019.

With such pivotal and transformative procedures coming up, I believe it is the perfect time to produce an update special on Carolyn to see how she has been and what her life has been like since this unspeakable tragedy.  She is truly a hero and, with additional exposure, could potentially save even more lives.

The update documentary special will air online during Domestic Violence Awareness month next year in October of 2019, and copies of the project will be provided to women's groups, shelters and domestic violence organizations all over the country.

Also donors will receive a special thank you and acknowledgement in the credits of the documentary, in addition to an invite to the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, California.

I sincerely hope you will help us with securing the budget for this significant and impactful story for one of the most courageous women in the world - Ms. Carolyn Thomas.  We would sincerely appreciate and be grateful for you support.

Thank you,

Mary Glynn and Carolyn Thomas
