Carmen's Road to Recovery
We rescued Carmen and her daughter, Georgie, on December 31st. We were informed prior to getting them that Carmen had recently foundered. Her front two feet had been casted so she could walk. Although this was more than we had expected to take on, how could we say no? Our hearts broke for these girls. Carmen could barely walk. Upon arrival to our facility we realized that Carmen's feet weren't her only problem. Her bloodwork showed that she had Cushing's Disease & high levels of insulin. She is on a special diet of Sentinal LS (low starch/sugar), hoof supplement, flax seed, organic apple cider vinegar, plain beet pulp (no molasses), Rx: Prascend, and soaked hay. Further investigation revealed (via x-ray) Carmen has an infection in her sinus cavity & tooth resporption of one of her back teeth. Currently, she is not stable enough for a tooth extraction and after mulitple rounds of different antibiotics & sinus flushing her sinus infection & discharge have not resolved. She still has rotation of her front right coffin bone & now has special shoes on all four hooves.
Through all of this she has maintained her sweet and affectionate disposition!
WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT, but we need your help! Vet bills have piled up & we are finally seeing some progress... Help us get Carmen comfortable enough to be allowed to enjoy everything a life with us has to offer!
