I'm Emilie, the founder of Bossed Up - a training company that helps women navigate career transition and step up as the boss of their lives.
Two years ago, Carmen joined me at one of our trainings in Boston after having just overcome a grueling trial of treatment to eradicate breast cancer.
In the year prior, Carmen underwent a double mastectomy, 6 rounds of chemotherapy and an unimaginable 28 rounds of radiation therapy. She went on daily medication, and started the challenge of rebuilding her life, as a breast cancer survivor and single mother to her beautiful 3-year-old, Sophia.
In the years since, I’ve been so thrilled to see Carmen launch her own photography business, fall in love again, and set a strong example for Sophia by getting into cycling - even going on to compete in a 3-day, 200-mile race that raised funds for breast cancer research.
But it is with a very heavy heart that I write today to share that Carmen just received a devastating diagnosis. Her cancer is back, and it’s metastasized to her bones throughout her shoulders, spine, and hips. Her cancer is stage four and she’s undergoing treatments to manage her pain and keep the cancer from spreading, but there is no way of knowing how much time we have left with her.
Carmen is focusing on the things in the future that she can look forward to and be excited about. She and her fiancé, Brian, are planning a casual backyard wedding in June to celebrate their joy, and Sophia turns 6 years old in July.
Here at Bossed Up, I couldn't sit idly by while one of our own 'bosses' faced this unimaginable fate.
