Mi nombre es Carmen y soy de Cidra, Puerto Rico. Hace ocho años fui
diagnosticada con una rara, incurable y progresiva enfermedad; LYMPHANGIOLEIOMYOMATOSIS PULMONAR (LAM).
En la llegada del 2011 comencé a sentir síntomas relacionados con esta enfermedad. Me sentía que no podía respirar, dolor en el pecho, el aire no llegaba a mis pulmones, era una sensación de estar atrapada; como un pez fuera del agua.
Después de varias evaluaciones médicas, estudios radiológicos y finalmente una biopsia de pulmón; desafortunadamente mi diagnóstico era muy desalentador. A partir de ese momento utilizo oxígeno las 24 horas del día para evitar hipoxemia y otros síntomas relacionados con la enfermedad.
Para ese tiempo existía muy poca información sobre el LAM y prácticamente los médicos en Puerto Rico no me dieron ninguna esperanza de vida. Los doctores me informaron que iba a ser candidata para trasplante de pulmón en un futuro. Luego de investigar sobre esta enfermedad que ataca solamente a las mujeres, quise avanzar y no permití dejarme vencer.
En primer lugar, fui a Pennsylvania para ser evaluada en PENN Hospital. Ahí comencé un tratamiento investigativo con el medicamento “Rapamune”. Después de un tiempo, en el año 2014, me trasladé a Mayo Clinic en Jacksonville, Florida para continuar con mi cuidado médico.
En mi reciente evaluación médica, los estudios radiológicos, la prueba de función pulmonar, entre otros, han revelado un deterioro significativo en ambos pulmones. El fallo respiratorio a consecuencia de la enfermedad ha aumentado y no estoy respondiendo adecuadamente al tratamiento con el inmunosupresor.
La recomendación médica ha sido colocarme de inmediato en la lista de espera para un TRASPLANTE DE DOBLE PULMÓN.
Toda esta situación que se me presenta es muy compleja y difícil. Una vez registrada en la lista de espera tengo que permanecer cerca del hospital Mayo Clinic donde se realizará el trasplante.
Al no contar con los recursos económicos necesarios me dirijo ha ustedes solicitando su generosa ayuda para recaudar fondos. Los gastos después del trasplante excede los $300,000 dólares. Estos fondos se utilizarán para cubrir los gastos de medicamentos inmunosupresores, hospedaje, alimento, transportación y seguimiento médico.
He combatido como guerrera incansable todas las adversidades que se han presentado en el transcurso de mi vida. Dios ha sido mi protector y aliado en esta batalla. De mi Señor Jesucristo he obtenido la fortaleza, esperanza, fe y la confianza de que todo va a estar bien. Su compañía ha sido un bálsamo de paz y misericordia en este proceso de mi vida.

My name is Carmen and I am from Cidra, Puerto Rico. Eight years ago I was diagnosed with a rare, incurable and progressive disease; LYMPHANGIOLEIOMYOMATOSIS PULMONAR (LAM).
On 2011 I began to feel symptoms related to this disease. I felt that I could not breathe, pain in my chest, the air did not reach my lungs, it was a feeling of being trapped; Like a fish out of water. After several medical evaluations, radiological studies and finally a lung biopsy; unfortunately, my diagnosis was very discouraging. From that moment I use oxygen 24 hours a day to avoid hypoxemia and other symptoms related to the disease.
At that time there was very little information about LAM and practically the doctors in Puerto Rico did not give me any hope of life. The doctors informed me that I would be a candidate for lung transplant in the future. After investigating this disease that attacks only women, I wanted to move forward and did not allow myself to be defeated. First, I went to Pennsylvania to be evaluated at PENN Hospital. There I started a research treatment with the drug "Rapamune". After a while, in 2014, I moved to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida to continue my medical care.
In my recent medical evaluation, radiological studies, pulmonary function tests, among others, have revealed a significant deterioration in both lungs. The respiratory failure as a result of the disease has increased and I am not responding adequately to the treatment with the immunosuppressant. The medical recommendation has been to place me immediately on the waiting list for a DOUBLE LUNG TRANSPLANT. All this situation that is presented to me is very complex and difficult. Once registered on the waiting list I have to stay near the Mayo Clinic hospital where the transplant will be performed.
As I do not have the financial resources, I am writing to you, asking for your generous help to raise funds. The expenses after transplant exceeds $ 300,000. These funds will be used to cover the cost of immunosuppressant drugs, lodging, food, transportation and medical follow-up.
I have fought as a tireless warrior all the adversities that have arisen in the course of my life. God has been my protector in this battle. From my Lord Jesus Christ I have obtained strength, hope, faith and confidence that everything will be fine. Your company has been a balm of peace and mercy in this process of my life.
