Caring for Kyah

Sometimes life has a way of slowing us down and reminding us what is really important.
On Friday morning my 5 year old granddaughter was dropped off at daycare and was completely fine - running , laughing and even fighting with the boys. An hour later daycare took her to school in the van. When they arrived at school she couldn’t move her arms to unbuckle her seat belt and couldn’t stand up. She started to vomit & lost consciousness. My daughter got her from school and took her right to the ER. We thought she had a head injury or concussion maybe from a fight with the boys or a fall the night before. They ran every test - catscan, head and neck MRI, EEG, EKG, - everything kept coming back fine. At this point she was unable to feel or move most of her body below her chest with the exception of her right arm. Around 12:30 Friday night we finally got a diagnosis, not a good one but at least we know what we are dealing with. It is Acute Transverse Myelitis. Here is a link to more information about ATM -https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/Transverse-Myelitis-Fact-Sheet

It is a lengthy road to recovery. No real cause just an infection in the spine that your body can’t fight off. We will take it day by day. The healing process gets worse before it gets better. She is currently on a ventilator and it’s been a really tough 60 hours. This is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of Please say prayers that Kyah makes a full recovery! We have been told to expect a 3-6 month recovery period that can even last up to two years. They have discussed rehabilitation centers and we do not know what the prognosis is. 1/3 of patients make a full recovery. Some stay paralyzed forever and some regain partial use of their limbs after extensive therapy. We will take her anyway we can get her. We believe in miracles and will continue to hope and pray for the best.
My daughter Tiersa is a single mom. I do not want her to have to choose between being where she needs to be with her daughter and worrying about getting to work to pay the bills and support her daughter. We do not like to ask for help but need to at this point. We have been told to expect a long road to recovery. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
