Caring Cradle for Washington Hospital Center

$8,838 of $12,000 goal

Raised by 71 people in 19 days
Each year, about 24,000 babies are stillborn (defined as an in utero death after 20 weeks gestation) in the United States. That is approximately 1 in 160 pregnancies - a rate that is much higher in minority and underserved communities. These numbers were on the decline, but have unfortunately plateaued.

When a baby is born still or dies shortly after birth, families only have one opportunity to spend time with them - to see, touch, bathe, hold, take pictures, or make memories as they say goodbye. Many families find this bonding time crucial to their healing process. Sadly, without the means to preserve the infant's body, this time is often limited.

A Caring Cradle is a cooling device that allows a family to spend more time with their baby in their hospital room. You can read more in this New York Times article  on the value devices like the Caring Cradle (similar to a CuddleCot) provide to grieving families.

Currently, Washington Hospital Center  does not have a Caring Cradle to offer families facing this traumatic loss.  Along with the families it supports, the DC Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Support Group (DCPLIDS)  asks for your help to provide Washington Hospital Center with a Caring Cradle ($5500+$500 shipping) so that these families can have the option of more time with their baby.

We thank you for your donation - any amount can help - by April 7, 2019.

UPDATE: We are going to try to raise the money for 2 Caring Cradles since we have already met our goal.  We will reach out to other DC hospitals to assess the need.  THANK YOU!
