Janice Valdez's Long Term Care

Donation protected
On September 9, 2015 Janice was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a high grade aggressive form of brain cancer that would require radical treatment.

The following week, family and friends gathered to support Janice in what would be a long and exhausting journey. Subsequently she had two procedures; the first was an embolization, in which surgeons cut off the blood supply to the area around the tumor, which had up until this point been feeding its growth. The second was surgery for a tumor resection, where they removed as much of the tumor as possible. Her neurosurgeon was successful in removing 90-95% of the mass, Although it was much more than they had initially anticipated, not all of the GBM was able to be extracted.

In the months following her surgery Janice has overcome every obstacle in her way. She started with physical, occupational and speech therapy and then continued with the goal of slowing the tumor growth by starting several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.

For months, she had multiple repeat images taken of her brain, with no new growth seen. However, in June 2016 her scans sadly showed there was significant growth in comparison to all of her previous scans. She has been continuing chemotherapy, but we all know that can slowly take a toll on a person’s body as well.

Janice has been blessed to have many friends and family members step up to the plate to help her with daily tasks as well as help her get to doctor’s appointments and chemotherapy infusions. Her wonderful husband, Steve, has been by her side through the whole process, often times being the only caregiver for Janice when no one else is in town. Janice’s body is getting weaker, and she is at the point where she needs 24/7 care.

We are asking for donations to provide a caregiver/nurse to help Janice in her home. The estimated out of pocket cost per month ranges between $7,000 and $10,000 and as her insurance does not cover this, it can financially become very straining. We have looked into other options to help cover the costs and unfortunately, Janice doesn’t qualify for any of these programs. Your donation will help cover the costs od daily care and assistance Janice currently needs, and potentially a hospice facility if that is where she needs to go. Any help received will help take some of the financial stress off of Steve and ensure Janice has appropriate care at all times, as our family has been spending a lot of time coordinating travel plans to help currently assist her with daily activities.

We sincerely thank you for the thoughts, prayers, and donations to help Janice and her family during this time!
