We are reaching out to help Kim Kennedy and her mom, Lee Brock.
Kim received devastating news just as her fortunes seemed on the rise. Recently hired as a tour account manager with a fabulous company in Los Angeles, she was looking forward to buying a car and saving money for a house. But pain in her back, first thought to be a muscle strain, would not go away. After six weeks, Kim went to a walk-in clinic. Medical tests showed she has an “undifferentiated carcinosarcoma.” It is a rare, incurable cancer, inexplicably developed in a healthy woman. Having started in Kim’s left lung, it has quickly progressed to stage 4, spreading to her lymph nodes, abdomen, kidneys, and pancreas. The pain has become excruciating and is only partly controlled by numerous medications.
There is no cure. Kim has limited time, but doctors are trying various medications and therapies to improve her functioning and extend her life. A trial drug (Xalkori) would shrink the tumors so she could live longer. Taking it twice a day, along with her pain management regimen, could make a difference in the length and quality of her remaining time. The cost of the drug is $17,680 a month. Insurance and coupons should offset some of this, but this drug will be a huge expense.
Kim and Lee are very private, but as their friends, we know that the costs are beyond their scope. Our donations will alleviate added stress and anxiety in their remaining time together. Money can make space for love.
Kim’s insurance has a $5,000 deductible. She is applying for disability, but that process takes many weeks. Funds are needed now, to reimburse/cover expenses such as:
· Targeted medications and therapies for strength, pain, appetite (roughly $20,000 a month)
· Medical tests such as CAT scans and MRIs (cost not yet reported but certainly substantial)
· Travel for Lee and Britt to reach LA (so far, Lee paid $1200 for her one-way ticket from Florida to LA)
· Housing and car rental for Lee and Britt. (Lee's one-month’s car rental is $1000)
· Food
And,
Sad to say, burial costs. Even with treatment, Kim's life will be cut short. She will leave behind her mother Lee, her daughter Brittany, her grandson Jaden, her roommate Heather, her many friends, and her dreams.
To those who know and love Kim, this is an opportunity to provide much-needed solace.
To those who know and love Lee, you know how much she has given of her time, her self, and her own funds to help others, as a guidance counselor, a school psychologist, a family member, and a friend.
