The Goat and Her Three Kids

Hi everyone! My name is Victor Canache , I am the director of The Goat and Her Three Kids .

On the 21st of February back in 2017 we made public our ambitions of turning one of Romania's best known fairy tales into a movie, by launching our very first Kickstarter  campaign.

Despite our doubts, our efforts were answered and help came in many different forms since then!
The project cost us roughly a little over $18000 in total NOT including the set and accommodations.
Because we couldn't afford renting a studio, and I despised the idea of filming in a regular house wherever, we agreed on building our own set. The mayor Ion Constantin, deputy mayor Ionel Dutescu and the board committee of our foster village Malu cu Flori aka The Flowery Shore, granted us permission to built on public land and most importantly, to recycle one of the town's abandoned building.
On the 21st of August 2017 Luana Georgita and I started chipping away at the old ruin  and for 10 consecutive days we worked from down to dusk rain or shine stacking together all the heavy material we needed to move on to the next challenge.

Apart from the recycled wood Praktiker sponsored us with materials worth $1500.
We spent 6 wonderful months with Tibi Popescu, his wife Delia and their family at their resort La Copaci  in The Flowery Shore, planing, sketching, making calls, writing contracts and when we weren't busting our skulls open with the logistics we would do physical work which ironically... took the load off, in a way.

The set was designed AND built entirely from the ground up by: myself, Luana, her brother Tudor and their father Ion Georgita in the span of 2 months. At times they couldn't be there so it would only be myself and Luana, but when they were present we'd work hard trying to get done as much as the day would alow us and sometimes we'd even work late into the night.

Even after we finished building the house we were still not out of the woods! Not even close! We also had to decorate the thing and we had to find the things to decorate it with! Plates, costumes, carpets, chairs, farm tools, shelves, pottery etc etc etc. We looked everywhere and got what we needed from many different sources! Some of the stuff, we received as a donation from  Invie Traditia , some we borrowed from National TV with the help of Teodor Goras, some we got from Luana's home town in Bistrita-Nasaud and had Tudor transport them over. A fair chunk of what we needed we collected around town!

On the 4 of November 2017 we started shooting. We shot for 5 days.

We didn’t have a complete team so we needed to do a lot of extra work! I was supposed to be the director and focus on that as much as I could but nevertheless both myself and Luana ended up standing in for the actors at times, improvise all sorts of props along the way and because we couldn’t afford a stunt man I even ended up doing my own fire stunt which was also my first fire stunt ever! I was set on fire 3 times and all went well, except it did not look good on camera so we found ourselves in quite a bit of a situation having to reshoot the scene!
But for that we had to wait almost a full year! The 6th day we had scheduled for the 4th of August 2018... precisely 8 months later.

We had only one shot at it and in order for us to finish what we started the 4th of August needed to be cloudy but without raining and we needed to avoid the forest even though we were filming right next to it! Keep in mind we started shooting the scene in November and now we had to finish it in August when everything was bright green.

Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don’t... well, the stars aligned and on the 4th of August when they set me on fire again, twice, it was cloudy, it didn’t rain, and we managed to avoid all the discrepancies. I hope!

Thanks to all of you, the Goat and Her Three Kids is now a 20 min short film that's been shot on a Arri Alexa camera with anamorphic lenses, and has two of Romania's greatest actors staring in it.

Our goal now is to  see our original purpose achieved, which is making the Feature Film.
