About the Project: The purpose of this project is to start a library in the CEB Luis Bogran school in Candelaria, Intibuca, Honduras. Currently, the school has no library books of any kind including no dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other reference books. The only books available to students are their textbooks, many of which are shared between two students.
My goal is to raise enough funds for the school to buy one book for each child (a mixture of reference books, fiction, and nonfiction). As many of you share my love of reading, I hope that you will be generous in your support of this project. There is no better gift than opening the mind of a child through reading.
If you have any questions about the project, about Candelaria, or about my own research please do not hesitate to contact me. I am hoping to raise these funds by August 1st so that I may accompany the teachers to the capital to buy their books while I am in Honduras.
About the School: The Luis Bogran Center for Basic Education (CEB Luis Bogran) is located in the community of Candelaria in Intibucá, Honduras. Candelaria is approximately one and a half hours by bus from the nearest large town of La Esperanza. The school is made up of:
- lndigenous Lencan students
- Primary school grades 1-6
- Lower-secondary school grades 7-9
- 381 total students, with 189 girls and 192 boys
- 240 students in primary school, 141 in lower-secondary school
- Serves 247 families in Candelaria
- Secondary students come from six different communities with some students walking an hour and a half to get to school.
- The director of the school is working towards adding grades 10-12 for a full technical degree in agriculture. There are 45 current students and 25 youth who have graduated from 9th grade on the waiting list to attend 10th-12th grades when it becomes available.
- The school also has a government-sponsored adult literacy program which takes place on Saturdays for four hours per day. Students in 9th grade volunteer to help teach reading to community members as a part of their social service requirement.
