Canadian Youth Need Skis

These young Canadian athletes need skis! They participate in the sport of biathlon – the winter multi-sport that involves cross-country ski racing and target shooting. The youths pictured above are members of 585 Rideau Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Our biathlon team is starting its third season. Last year, in only our second season, four cadets qualified and participated in the Provincial Championships. This year, 585 Squadron hopes to send even more. How did we achieve such success without skis? We borrowed them. Only one skier on the team owns his own pair. The others used borrowed and sometimes ill-fitting equipment. Our cadets, aged 12 to 18, practice every Saturday by shooting on our indoor range and running laps around the squadron building. When the ski trails are ready, they will need ski equipment to train on. We have rifles but we need skis, boots, bindings, and poles. Mother Nature will provide the snow.
Why do we need to raise $5000? Because Air Cadets does not charge anything to join or participate. There is no membership fee and no fees to join a team. Anyone can participate, no matter what their financial situation. Although the Department of National Defence is a major supporter of the cadet movement, we rely on fundraising for all “extra-curricular” activities, such as biathlon. Most families can’t afford to outfit a growing child with ski equipment. The $5000 will go towards the purchase of 12 sets of skis, bindings, boots, and poles to permanently outfit our team. We also need a waxing kit to properly prepare and maintain the equipment so that cadets can use it year after year. We will buy the equipment from our fantastic local sport shop, SportX, in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
