Can you help us cure our little boy?

Anyone who meets my three-and-a-half-year-old son Adam witnesses his energy and charm that lights up a room. On December 23, 2017, that energy and charm received a blow because he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Although we were devastated with the news, I knew for his sake that we had to put on our happy faces and trudge along through a year of treatment and inevitable weeks long hospitalizations.

After undergoing chemotherapy for a month, Adam's cancer was not in remission as we all had hoped. This meant that he had a higher risk of the cancer relapsing in the future and a slightly lower survival rate of 88 percent (down from 95%) While this may not sound like the worst news ever, it meant that he had to undergo a more intense second round of chemotherapy that was dramatically more toxic than what was previously planned for him. Some of the treatments were so toxic that they caused chemical meningitis which made him vomit severely and lead to him being hospitalized for three separate stints during February of 2018. His last trip to the hospital that month lasted exactly two weeks. Not only that, the chemotherapy had frequently suppressed his immune system to the point where a cold could hospitalize him and a fungal infection could make him severely ill or kill him.

As the months kept changing, Adam lost so much weight that he was in the fourth percentile for his age.

During a three week stay in the hospital that was brought on by immunosuppression, we finally got the news on April 20, 2018 that the Leukemia was in remission! Since that time, with round the clock care, he has gained ten pounds and grown about two inches!

We have done everything in our power to rescue him from this disease, and even though our insurance is good, it will not cover the full cost of maintenance treatment which will last for an additional 3 years. As this is being written, we have already paid over $12,331 in medical bills and supplies. Our insurance company has paid the rest except for the out of pocket yearly minimum of $6,000 we have to pay each year until the conclusion of his maintenance course of chemotherapy. If you do the math, my wife and I will need to pay $18,000 out of pocket to treat Adam and keep the Leukemia in remission before the insurance company pays a hundreds percent of the medical bills covered under their policy.

With that said, I humbly ask for your help: Will you help us ensure that Adam gets all the care he needs? Your help will not only give us peace of mind, but it will greatly reduce stress so we can remain loving, strong and healthy enough to give him the the care he seriously needs. Please donate anything you can afford. There is no amount that is too small. Last, but not least: please remember to share this link on your social media feed so others can have a chance to contribute or share as well.
