Please help us fund Camp Rise n’ Shine, a volunteer organized summer camp providing emotional support and a safe space for children and young teens affected by HIV/AIDS and other at risk youth.

“I love Camp Rise n’ Shine! It’s like my other family!”

Our Story:

For 28 years Rise n’ Shine/Inspire Youth Project provided emotional support to children and teens affected by HIV/AIDS through support groups, mentoring, and an annual summer camp. RnS/IYP provided a safe and loving space for the children and teens to be able to share their struggles, be themselves flaws and all, and just be kids. The community that was built upon this mission grew so strong that it not only changed the lives of the children and families supported by RnS/IYP but also those of the volunteers and staff.

Though the organization sadly closed in 2016, the community that was built lives on. Mentors and mentees still get together, kids continue to reach out to each other and volunteers when they need support, and through the work of dedicated volunteers the annual summer camp has is happening!

In 1988 our founder Janet L. Trinkaus saw the need that the AIDS crisis was creating for children. As people were facing the struggles of HIV/AIDS the children in their lives were often unable to receive the support and means to grow and flourish that every child should have, as well as the guidance through the fear of loss and grief that all too often accompanied HIV/AIDS in those days. She committed her life to providing that support for every child she could. Janet, along with an incredible group of staff and volunteers created an organization that changed lives; an organization built on compassion that, as the nature of HIV/AIDS changed evolved to support the new struggles facing children and teens affected by the disease and expanded to support other children facing similar needs.

Janet dreamed of a summer camp where the kids could be immersed in the loving environment they needed, with people who were there completely to support them and allow them the freedom to just be kids for a week. Janet’s dream was first realized over 20 years ago with tents on a friend’s farm. The camp quickly grew and in 1995 was so large that it was moved to the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp. A strong bond was quickly created with the beautiful space and Camp Rise n’ Shine has been held there ever since. The collaboration with the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp staff and space were so strong that the camp became home to a memorial tree grove planted by children and teens who had lost a family member to AIDS. Members of the Rise n’ Shine family have even chosen to scatter loved ones’ ashes at the memorial tree grove and the in the waters of the lake, including those of our beloved founder Janet.

This year the bond with the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp continues as they have helped us find a way to still host a camp.

We are asking for your support in helping to send 35-40 kids and 18-20 volunteers to camp. Funds will go to covering everything from the fees to the YMCA for each child and adult, a bus to get everyone to and from camp and all the supplies needed to help the kids have an amazing experience.
