Kouk Pou Primary School in Cambodia

My name is Tida Tep and I’m the daughter of Cambodian immigrants. Here's a photo of my parents at a refugee camp in Thailand.

In 1984, my parents were lucky enough to immigrate to the U.S. Over the years, they’ve worked hard to support themselves and their family and friends still in Cambodia.

My parents have lived through unspeakable tragedies, but have persevered through hard work and relentless determination. Because of their selfless sacrifices, I have lived a life of privilege and opportunity that I will never take for granted.

Now it’s my turn to give back.

My mother's village, Kouk Pou in the Takéo province, is in a poorly serviced remote rural area approximately 95 km south of Phnom Penh. The children in Kouk Po come from poor rice cropping families with limited prospects and scarce resources, which makes it difficult for them to break out of the cycle of poverty.

The village’s only school, The Kouk Po Primary School, is in dire need of assistance. Its broken windows, leaky ceilings, damaged floors, and shattered steps are a sight to behold. When it rains, students resort to sitting in the corners of the room to keep dry, and they often have to sit on the floor because there aren’t enough chairs and desks. The school even lacks basic staples like notebooks, pencils, and textbooks.

That’s why I’m raising money to help the school by purchasing basic supplies for each student so they can all have the educational experience every child deserves. My family in Kouk Po will purchase backpacks, notebooks, pencils and pens and we are working closely with the school’s principal to coordinate the distribution.

Cambodians are still suffering from the trauma of years of war and genocide, which have led to high levels of inter-generational post-traumatic stress, mental illness, alcoholism, and domestic violence, among other widespread social problems that plague the country to this day. The rural and remote areas are rife with poverty, sickness, and child malnutrition.

Many villagers from Kouk Po migrate to Phnom Penh to find work, but they face extraordinary challenges because their education and skill levels are too low.

With your support, the school children at Kouk Po Primary School will have the basic tools and resources to help combat illiteracy, improve their educations, and create opportunities for themselves outside of the village to help break the cycle of poverty.

Every little bit helps, so please support the children of this village with a contribution.

Thank you!
