Dear family and friends, comrades and colleagues, I've (worker self-)managed to get myself selected as a representative to my union's Regional Assembly in Portland, Oregon this coming weekend (26-27 April, 2019). Without going into too much detail, let's just say that our state's trifecta-Democratic government has proposed a cuts budget for K-14 education in Oregon, and we are considering our options.
Of course, it's been set at the end of a month, right before monthly paychecks. Who plans these things? So, affording to drive looms as an obstacle. Round-trip mileage is about 450, and since I maneuvered out of fronting for a hotel room (by planning to stay with local friends), I figure an extra 150 miles of driving will probably cover anything I have to drive incidental to the trip. At 30 mpg, that comes to 20 gallons of gasoline, at $3.29/gal. is $70. GoFundMe wants its cut, and what if I need a quart of oil. $100 seems a nice round number, a small ask for a big task, also with room for errors like not quite making it to goal.
Can you help a comrade out in the class struggle? (See what I did there, heh.) I'm very aware that your support not only has made my efforts as a teacher even possible so far, but also that in real ways, your contributions have meaningfully helped fund education in Oregon, which won't quite pay for its own. My gratitude is reflected in the work I do, but I also love to express it directly to you as well. Thanks for your aid so far, and for your considerations in this instance! xo, --CD
