My cousin Calvin was diagnosed with a unique form of cancer. In June of this year he was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma, a type of cancer typically found in smokers and is found in the lungs. For him to have this type of cancer in the areas he has, it is an extremely rare case. He is 34 years old, does not smoke and is not exposed to smoke at work or home.  His cancer has progressed to stage four, where the cancer has spread to numerous organs in his body including his pancreas and liver. It is incurable.

The diagnosis was a shock but Calvin and his family are fighting this disease with hope and courage.  He is currently being treated with chemo therapy, where he receives treatments for three consecutive days followed by three weeks of rest. This cycle will be repeated three times and then evaluated for its effectiveness. Despite numerous setbacks from his health care providers and limited assistance from his health insurance, Calvin is hopeful for recovery and a return to good health.

When Calvin was first taken to the hospital and given the news that he had cancer I was in awe of what he was most worried about. He was afraid of not being able to pay for the ambulance ride, afraid of being in the hospital over the weekend because of the cost. It was hard for me to think of my cousin hearing he’ll have to fight a life threatening disease but worry more about not being able to pay his hospital bill.

Regardless of his condition Calvin still remains positive and funny. Calvin lives in Las Vegas with his girlfriend of several years Dezi. He had recently began working for Amazon as an Associate in Returns. In his spare time he enjoys photography, hiking and board games.

Thank you for reading this page and learning about Calvin’s story. Please donate what you can to help Calvin focus on the fight in front of him and not be distracted by the burden of paying for quality care. You can stay updated by following #calvinstrong on Instragram and Facebook.
