Through our annual Culture Show , the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) of UC Berkeley aims to examine and share Vietnamese culture by creating a unique performance space for members to learn about and educate others on Vietnamese history, community, and traditions. Culture Show fosters an environment of learning and creative expression for its participants who work collectively in order to produce this theatrical production that combines music, art, dance, drama, and prose.

This year’s story brings into focus the struggles of Vietnamese refugees and their children following the Vietnam War. After the Fall of Saigon on April 30th, 1975, many Vietnamese no longer considered Vietnam to be their home, so they abandoned everything they had to relocate elsewhere. This desire to escape and forget led refugees not to share their personal stories with their children. It was a choice, much like any other, that came with many consequences. Culture Show 2017 aims to demystify, validate, celebrate, and protect the narratives of refugees—who all deserve to be recognized.
As a student-run production, we rely heavily on our school grants and community sponsorships. However, with the hikes in our current venue price, our organization has to fundraise an extra $5,000 to help cover the cost increase and make the show happen this year. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated and your support is essential for Cal VSA Culture Show 2017 to be the best it can be!
