Concrete Canoe

Engineering students at California State University Los Angeles come together to make up a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers(ASCE). Each year, Cal State LA ASCE competes in the Pacific Southwest Conference(PSWC) in various engineering events. Concrete Canoe uses the skills learned in the classroom to design, model, and construct a canoe made completely from concrete. Students must design the canoe themselves, and create their own concrete mix for this year-long project. 

Concrete Canoe provides students extra opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. When working on this project, students do more than just apply their engineering knowledge. Concrete Canoe members an learn to  improve their leadership skills,  work as a team, expand their network, meet professional in the industry, and many more professional skills that will help them in their professional careers. 

At PSWC, team will display their canoe, provide a detailed technical report and presentation to judges, and compete in multiple races against the other universities in the region.  This weekend conference includes may other events for students to compete in. There are smaller engineering competitions and sporting events that the students compete in. At the end of the conference, a banquet is held for all of the students to reflect back on their year of hard work. Students from every school get to meet each other and learn more about other schools and people. 

To have a successful project year, the team needs to have the funds to purchase testing and construction materials, transportation, lodging, and much more.  Cal State La's Concrete Canoe team greatly appreciate any help that you can provide, and any amount donated will help the team reach its goals of taking first place in the Pacific Southwest and competing at the National Level in Florida in June.
