Help Naomi Recover from Brain Injury

Naomi will hate that we included this photo, but it's important for you to know the severity of her condition.

The Backstory…
A day into the new 2019 year Naomi suffered a seizure at work. This set off a rapid decline in her health involving multiple seizures, her mood and behavior was erratic, her memory spotty. Over the course of a week she was admitted and discharged to the emergency department on three different occasions as well as visiting a neurologist. Eventually, after a severe seizure she was finally admitted to the neuro ICU at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu.

In summary, Naomi was diagnosed with encephalitis. Encephalitis is an uncommon and serious condition that causes inflammation of the brain. Complicating the situation, the cause of her encephalitis has not been determined and 2 weeks after admit to the hospital and the doctors still don’t know what’s causing it.  Her doctors are working tirelessly to help her. She has undergone many tests to figure out what is going on including a few lumbar punctures, CT and MRI scans, EEG monitoring (checks brain activity) and many blood draws. She has respiratory care doing therapies to keep her lungs healthy.

Since being in the ICU her health has further declined to its current state of mostly unresponsiveness. She is unable to recognize people or voices, she doesn’t follow commands, she barely moves her body and when she does it’s involuntary, she can’t speak, she can’t eat or drink, and she is monitored constantly for risk that she stops breathing.

Who Naomi is...
During the first few days in the hospital, when Naomi was still talking, but clearly confused, with a big smile she insisted that everyone in the room try her food. “It’s so good,” she said.

"You have to try it!”

“Have some!”

All of us in the room opted to NOT try the hospital food (haha), but the point is to illustrate what Naomi is like. Even in her worst state she was trying to give to others. Generosity is at the core of her being and if you knew her, you likely experienced this. Naomi is known to always have gifts in hand whether it be a new outfit for your newborn, a calendar/notebook if she noticed you struggling to organize your busy days, or most likely hand wrapped candy or cookies that she wanted you to try brought home from one of her world travels.

Most importantly Naomi was generous with her time. Despite always being busy she always took time to set up a visit, a lunch or dinner, to make a call, or to send a text to her family and friends. She made sure to go to church on Sundays and helped with church activities and camps when she could.

And so with this in mind this GoFundMe was born. It’s our turn now to give back to Naomi in her time of need.

The costs...
We are, of course, holding onto the hope that Naomi will fully recover from this condition, but it will be a long battle. We pray that she will soon overcome the encephalitis, but according to her doctors even after she does she faces the real possibility of months of rehab to re-teach her to do even the most basic tasks like walking and feeding herself.

We are reaching out on behalf of our dear friend and family member Naomi. The funds you donate will go directly to help her cover the hospital care, her post hospital recovery, and rehab. Due to the rare nature of her affliction many of the costs are adding up quickly as doctors need to continue tests and care to determine what is causing this condition. J

ust a few examples of medical costs include continued stay in ICU (approx. $2,000 per day) , plasmapheresis (approx. $2000 per treatment), and the IVIG treatment she received (approx. $10,000-20,000 per treatment). Each blood test, MRI and CT scan, respiratory treatment, medication dose can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Naomi will likely not be able to return to work for months so any funds from this campaign are VERY appreciated to help her pay for not just the hospital costs, but her normal living expenses as well.

Naomi is the real deal. She is fun, outgoing and adventurous, deep and thoughtful, and is a true friend. We can’t imagine what she is going through or experiencing, but we remind her daily that she is loved and not alone.  She is the kind of person that would make you laugh or smile even if she was having a bad day herself. She gives with her whole heart and loves to come up with plans and ways to bless those around her, even in the smallest ways like sharing her food, or just making sure you are taken care of. She’s generous with her precious time and talents, and really so much more.

Join us in pulling together to offer what we have, whether it’s big or small, we can certainly uplift and support Naomi in the most practical way possible on the road to recovery.
