Gulf Breeze Reading Camp

Gulf Breeze Reading Camp welcomes children struggling with reading in our area who are seven- to eleven-years-old or grades 2nd thru 5th. There is no charge to their families. They are recommended by their school counselors and teachers,
Some kids develop an attitude about reading. They don't like to sit down and read a book. They think it is boring. We want to teach them that “Reading can be fun”. We give them 15 hours of reading instruction and fill the afternoons with normal day camp activities.
Last year we went to the Gulf Breeze Zoo the first day of camp. The next day we visited the Gulf Breeze Library. The campers picked an animal and researched its habitat. They learned how to cite their sources and wrote up what they found in writing lab. In arts & crafts they made a diorama of their animal's habitat. (See some of them in the picture above.) This year we will be learning about Pensacola's first settlement, and visiting the Northwest Florida Public Archaeology Network Museum.
I am requesting four picnic tables to extend space for reading camp. We would need the money by June 1 to have time to purchase and install them. If we have picnic tables, we could eat breakfasts, lunches, and snacks outside. The campers could do activities such as arts and crafts or morning welcome meetings outside. We even have a canopy we can put up for shade. Four tables would just about seat everyone. The tables would also be available year-round for use by the church and other community groups.
The campers, the staff and I would be very grateful for any help you can give us. We can also use volunteers for our program. Visit Volunteermatch.org for more information and to volunteer some time.
