Health Clinic for One More Day

Friends and family,

During our time in Kenya, my Princeton peers and I have spent a few weekends at One More Day for Children, an orphanage for girls that come from circumstances of sexual abuse (often which results in pregnancy out of marriage) and child marriage in their villages. While the orphanage currently provides a safe place for over 62 girls and their children (since their founding, they have rescued over 230 girls), they are in need of much more — ranging from the basic necessities of utensils and toilet paper to jumprope and books. Hopefully, we can donate these goods on our weekend trips using our own resources. However, the journey to the orphanage is long, and it is not uncommon that the girls arrive in poor health or arrive already pregnant. It is very clear that  One More Day’s greatest need is a health clinic on site that will be able to treat sickness as it arises among the children and assist in healthy pregnancies and deliveries. Currently, they either drive for a few hours on bumpy roads and unreliable vehicles to get to the nearest hospital, a trip that costs more and more each time, or they visit a local clinic that is poorly stocked that often doesn’t have the medication and resources needed for adequate care. In April of 2017, they started building a health clinic on site but it stands empty, as they are short $7,300 to finish paying the builder and complete the clinic. Finishing this clinic would be life-changing for One More Day and the children it houses.

Between the 18 of us, we are hoping to raise enough money to finish the clinic by the end of August. Any donation would be greatly appreciated, and please feel free to share with others. If you would like to talk to me personally about my experience at the orphanage, I would be more than happy to share stories of the children, the buildings, and speak a little more to the organization. More about One More Day for Children can be found here: www.onemoredayforchildren.or

The Mpala Board has decided to match all gifts 1:1 up to $5,000, so your gift will have double the impact. If you are looking to give a larger amount and would like your donation to be tax deductible, you can give online to Mpala Research Center:  (www.mpala.org/Donate_Now.php. On the last page before confirmation of the payment, there’s a place where you specify details “for the seller.” There, specify “For One More Day for Children outreach project” and the donation will go towards the campaign efforts.
