Cancer cant win

Donation protected
As I’m sitting here typing this, I’m in disbelief. I could have never imagined a place in time where I would be asking strangers to financially help someone in my family, but I also could have never imagined picking up the phone to hear the words “ we found cancer on your mothers ct scan” from a doctor I’ve never met- and yet here we are.

On Wednesday February 13th my mother went in for treatment for kidney stones. During a ct scan to assess the size of the stones multiple lytic lesions were found on her pelvis, hip bone, upper thigh area as well as lower spine. Our world changed in that second.  We left from that appointment and directly went to the oncologist that was referred from her primary care doctor. Meeting with her we learned that lytic lesions only come from certain cancers. We have ruled out two based on tests, leaving lung cancer and breast cancer as options. We spent the day today at the cancer center for a PET scan to get a full picture of where the cancer originated as well as where else it has spread.

My mother has worked every year of her 62 on this planet. My father works 40+ hours a week at a construction company he has spent his entire adult life with. He pays monthly for health insurance. They costs even at this point have become a lot. Insurance doesn’t cover every test that is needed. Co-payments to just see her oncologist are 95.00 each time.  We haven’t even gotten to the cost of treatments.

My mother is unable to work due to the amount and severity of lytic lesions. The oncologist is worried that she will break her hip or worse and it would delay any treatment for the cancer itself. My father is proud and always the one giving. He would never ask for help and so I am doing it for them.

The power of prayer is so so much more important at this juncture than financial support as far as we are concerned but in the reality of life , cancer costs money. And if me asking for strangers to help financially could do anything at all to allow my mother a fighting chance in this, then I couldn’t forgive myself if I hadn’t tried.
