I want your time to tell you about my friend Natu. I met Natu in my first few hours in pushkar, I had just hitchhiked here and spent my last 30 rupees on a mango. Running out of money was clearly a new concept to me and he raced around with me showed me so much generosity and helped me get it sorted in a couple of days. How fortunate was I?! Natu is in the same situation where his last rupee is really his last. Natu is a musician, a legacy passed from his father, his grandfather and his great grand father. Natu plays his sitar (a classic Rajasthani instrument) up and down the street, also selling his CD. Everyday.
Natus father is very sick very very sick. I spent last night with his family in the home on the outskirts of town bordering the desert. It's been an ongoing chronic pain issue in his ear and throat that has left him unable to eat for 10 months. The family alone has burnt through their savings and spent over 5000 euro on medical bills. They still are making the 4 hour bus journey weekly getting him to a good hospital. They is no diagnosis still, doctors are now just trying to keep him out of pain. Its excruciating and incredibly difficult cirmcumstances for the family. Natu now is making the sole income for his family. Not only to pay to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. But also his father's medical bills have to be paid. He has a family of 7, he is the oldest boy at 20. They sleep together in a home that is under the stars and no bigger than a king size bed but the "bed" is the dusty ground. His family are as positive as they can be despite facing such a financial burden, they are looking at losing their home if things don't change soon. I asked Natu what's your dream? He says to me "My dream really is to have my own camel. Natus Camel Tours! With a camel he can earn a stable income and enough to keep him and his family fed and healthy. To be able to afford the treatment his father needs. And to have a dream realized and come true. It's not easy to ask for help but when you help others by a means of helping themselves it really makes a difference. A camel would change Natus life and possibly save his father's.
