Burned Nicaraguan Children Need You

Tax deductible
Our Backstory:

For over 27 years, Nicaragua’s only free burn hospital and outpatient center for children, APROQUEN, is in real jeopardy of closing its doors. As a result of the recent and continuing political and social unrest since April 2018, the Nicaraguan economy has become paralyzed, its ports are currently dysfunctional, and tens of thousands have lost their jobs. Uncertainty continues to impact all essential services.

OUR CHILDREN:

The Nicaraguan Children of APROQUEN Need You! They need your financial support as this current crisis has had a direct impact on our operational capacity, our ability to provide treatment services, educational burn prevention programs (how to manage fire at home and cooking safety), and execute rehabilitation programs. Many don’t know that burn rehabilitation can be a life-long process; such is the case for Judeysi.

To get a better understanding of what the children of Nicaragua face and how APROQUEN is a life-saving and changing force for them, please watch this short video:

Our Hospital and Programs:

At this moment, the containers of medical supplies that we annually secure as in-kind donations by a medical supplier in the U.S. have been suspended because Nicaraguan ports are restricted. This forces us to buy much needed medicines and medical supplies in Nicaragua, if available. In addition, our burn prevention educational program, launched just last year is on hold because of the level of insecurity due to violence in the areas of Nicaragua where the program was fully functioning.

It is vital to continue to provide critical care to Nicaragua’s children, more so now in such a volatile situation. Tragically, the daily violence often includes the setting of fires, one of which recently resulted in 6 deaths including a two year old little girl and a baby of just 5 months old. This cannot be the time to turn our backs on these children. At this moment, we have admitted 5-year-old Miguel Ángel, a child with approximately 30% of his body burnt. He is in critical condition and receiving intensive care.

With all of the difficulties and uncertainty, APROQUEN remains open providing essential burn treatment services to children, some of whom are victims of the current violence.
