BuildAfuture for Kibera

BuildAfuture is a more than a dream, it is a plan and a mission with one true goal: change a child`s future. A handful of dreamers are taking action, researching, planning, getting people together, raising money and implementing an ambitious project: to build an educational center for children living in harsh conditions.

While adults are generally forced to carry on with their difficult lives, in order to provide for their families, making little to no change for their future, children still have the chance to start a different life. The key is having someone who would be there to support, encourage and provide basic needs for them. It`s not easy to learn on an empty stomach, it`s not easy to run with bare feet, it`s not easy to envision a future while surviving the present. They need someone to tell them that there are also other possibilities in life, sustain their growth and show them how and what they can learn and achieve themselves.

Our target is Kibera, one of the largest slums in the world. There are over 2.5 million slum dwellers in Nairobi and most of them live in Kibera. The harsh reality is that kids under 14 years represent 56% of the population there. Lack of basic hygiene, food and education are taking away the chance to a normal future.


The dream and the plan for now

As we are moving at a fast pace, already having deposited a $20K advance for the land, we know it is a slow process, a long-term goal, but with a lifetime of rewards. In order to move forward, we need to pay the rest of the money ($3000) preferably this summer in order to cover the total cost of the land: $23K.

We already have an architect working on the construction plan. The land was measured and as soon as we will have the construction plan we can start working on the actual building.

The center

A home, a meal, a school, a guide, a future.
Besides the boarding facilities, the new center will also provide food and education.
Most of the children have endured traumas that a normal child cannot imagine, therefore philological and medical support will be provided.

Even more important, all kids will be able to learn how to sustain themselves after graduating – which is why besides the main school subjects, we want to teach them gardening, sewing and other arts and crafts so that they can discover and use their potential.

A well-thought plan was developed, but we are welcoming failure as we are eager to learn, but most importantly to help.
