Build a home for earthquake family

Donation protected
Hi everyone. My name is Sharon and I am raising funds for my friend Raj and his family.

Raj is a travel guide in Nepal and anyone that meets him immediately discovers a friend. He is a genuine and kind soul who truly connects with people and provides an amazing experience of Nepal to every single guest. Raj loves his home country of Nepal and is also a loving son and a devoted husband and father to his own young family.

As you would be aware, Kathmandu experienced a devastating earthquake in 2015. Raj received a lot of support from his friends all around the world. The funds were used to help villagers in his home town of Bhaktapur to get back on their feet. More than 300 families benefited from the money and were able to receive immediate relief such as food, clothes, tents etc. Raj didn’t think of spending the money on his immediate family. Rather he helped as many families as possible.

His own parents also experienced trauma during the earthquake with their modest home being severely damaged. The roof collapsed, the farming land up-earthed and cracks appeared in walls of their home.  They continued to live there despite the risks and discomforts, as they had little alternative.

Raj’s parents are humble and sweet people. They have earned their living for 5 decades as farmers so they remained optimistic and simply continued to work their land and pay no mind to their troubles. This has gone on for over 4 years now.

However, this past summer the monsoon was severe, killing over 30 people and more injured and missing from building collapses, landslides and floods all around the country.  Raj’s parents home was damaged even further and now it’s in a very poor state and certainly a danger to live in. With excess water in the footings and cracks of every size in the walls of this simple construction, it could completely collapse at any time. Luckily their 2 buffalo, 1 cow and chickens were ok so they continue to operate their small farm.

We’re looking to raise funds to build a modest home with 3 rooms. The bamboo and clay building will consist of a room for guests so that his parents can host tourists with a genuine rural homestay experience and that way they might make a living into their old age without it having to be so physically demanding.

The house will include a bedroom for his parents and combined kitchen/living/dining room. There will be traditional amenities outside in an out-shed.

The home will continue to be a modest arrangement but safe and cosy for them. Such a building is estimated to require $US35000.

Raj is borrowing some money from the bank to build his parents house whilst also having to provide for his own young family in Kathmandu itself.  He doesn't have the financial capacity to borrow the entire amount required. We are seeking to raise funds to supplement what he can borrow. We need the funds as soon as its possible as his parents are living in a partly collapsed building.
