EDS Siblings 3&5 need surgery in US

Brodie is a 4 year old boy born with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a rare genetic condition for which there is little medical understanding and no cure. EDS is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders. The collagen in the bodies of people with EDS is faulty. Collagen is the 'glue' that holds your body together and provides tensile strength to body parts like skin, joints, muscles, ligaments, blood vessels and internal organs. The faulty collagen does not provide enough strength to properly support body structures in a person with EDS, therefore Brodie suffers with daily chronic widespread pain, gastrointestinal issues, joint laxity, easy bruising, subluxations (joints that partially dislocate that can cause nerve impingement), trouble regulating his internal body temperature, chronic fatigue and on occasion causes feelings of aggression because he doesn't ever get a break from his pain and EDS symptoms. On top of it all, Brodie has been experiencing symptoms of a tethered spinal cord that is causing neuro-physical and neurological challenges on top of pain. As most people that know me realize, as Brodie’s mom, I also have a diploma in nursing so while I am not an expert by any stretch of the means, I do have the training to recognize when something is wrong. Last year, we attended a McMaster University Canadian Medical Education conference for EDS. It was there that we met Dr. Petra Klinge from the USA who presented on tethered cord in EDS. Dr. Klinge is a neurosurgeon who specializes in complex spine cases. We have tried to see specialists here at home but all our concerns have been dismissed after long wait lists. Desperate, we recently took Brodie to see Dr. Klinge in the USA.  Dr. Klinge confirmed a severe tethered cord and a small nodule cyst against his spinal cord where it is tethered. He requires surgery from this skilled neurosurgeon urgently to protect against irreversible tissue and nerve damage.  Sadly, we do not have access to a neurosurgeon in Ontario. This is confirmed by McMaster’s innovative patient included conference focused on bridging gaps in diagnostic and treatment criteria for EDS.
We must head to Rhode Island for Brodie’s surgery, which is scheduled on June 17th. Tethered spinal cord syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column. It is like a rubber band stretching causing Brodie so much pain and pressure. Brodie’s tethered spinal cord syndrome went undiagnosed until his pain, sensory & motor problems, and loss of bowel and bladder control emerged....requiring his immediate need for surgery. Brodie suffers daily with leg weakness where Ontario specialists only offer is to prescribe the use of a wheelchair and his incontinence is worsening by the day (changing his clothes 5 + times a day). We are desperately seeking comfort and a better quality of life for our son.
Here is where you come in - We are asking you to please help contribute to this highly necessary yet very costly surgery. Our costs are estimated at $50,000 for this surgery. Please, if you can help out in any way, it would mean so much to all of us but especially Brodie.
Please share with your friends and family and help Brodie so he can have a better quality of life. Thank you so much for taking the time to read his story and for helping in any way you can.
We are also setting up a Trust Account for Brodie at the TD CANADA TRUST and will provide an update post here in case you would prefer to donate directly that way.
Again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Home sweet home...Brodie is excited to be back home....he describes his pain as "pounding" so thankfully we have a medication that provides effective pain control, of course until the 4 hours are nearing....then the cycle continues! I thank you all so much for the constant sharing and words of support and love! We continue to find strength knowing we have so many supporters and people routing for our family!

Sadly at our visit in Rhode Island, we weren't given the most promising news regarding Peyton and her continued incontinence....some are fortunate to have their incontinence issues resolved after they have a tethered cord release surgery like Brodie did....but sadly Peyton wasn't so fortunate....she continues to have a disconnect and unaware of when she is wet or soiled....probably resulting in additional surgeries and definitely additional tests in her near future....and in addition to that, my husband has been going for testing & had an MRI to determine if he has a tethered cord as well....things are not looking to promising for him either! STRESS, STRESS, & more STRESS.....

But I am going to keep being positive....

After a few rescheduled dates due to contagious illnesses, Brodie has finally had his revision to his tethered spinal cord surgery from June. Brodie has been experiencing a lot of pain at the incisional site as the nerve endings had attached to the scar tissues that formed...and due to his poor tissue fragility and wound healing (compliments of EDS) Brodie's incision did not approximate nor heal well, and finally today he had a spinal procedure which fixed all of that. Unfortunately this is yet again completely out of pocket for our family. As you are aware, we have endured an extremely large financial hardship already due to the 2 previous surgeries for our son and daughter and now compound this on top of the hosptial bills that are still Outstanding from the previous surgeries... We are beyond stressed as we have held out hope that some miracle from our government would come our way and help cover these medically necessary surgeries...but sadly to no avail. Please, we ask, we beg youto keep sharing our story....if you have anything at all you can Donate with we would me more than grateful. All our fundraising efforts seem to have came to a halt and we have no idea how these bills will get paid compounded with this terrible exchange rate the way it is.

So please, please, please keep sharing with friends and family. It means so much to us. We will continue to have their trust fund open for donations for anyone that can generously help out. Thank you so much from all of us. Your continued love and support means the world.

This past month has been very challenging as we have been tapering off their pain meds because the side effects were horrendous....making our normally mild temperament children act like very aggressive, behavioural animals. We have been asked to leave play groups as their behaviours have been so out of control, so we decided despite the fact that their pain wouldn't be controlled we needed to wean off! It hasn't been an easy ride in any way shape or form! We continue with hydrotherapy a few times a week and physiotherapy. I feel completely helpless as their pain is yet again being unmanaged....and until this medication leaves their body completely we can't do a trial of something new. Their side effects are terrible....hallucinations, rapid heart rates, and insomnia! The time is quickly approaching for Brodie's next surgical procedure on December 16th in Rhode Island!
I cannot even fathome how we will pay for that surgical procedure as we are still making payments on his original one from June and Peyton's surgery from September! I've been constantly fighting with our government to pay for these life saving surgeries but sadly no avail. My optimism is fading fast!!!
These little ones never stop amazing me with their strength
