Brianna's India Study Abroad Fund
Donation protected
As you might know, two days after Christmas, I will embark on the biggest adventure of my life so far and hop on a plane to India! There, I'm going to study at St. Xavier's College in the busy city of Calcutta , which is home to over 14 million people. I'm going to stay with a host family in the city, attend the college, and volunteer at a clinic for mental health. I will experience the joy of adventure accompanied by the fear of the unknown. I will constantly be bombarded with different sights, smells, languages, and experiences while being surrounded by the hustle, bustle and extreme poverty of this city. I am so excited to be challenged and to grow as an individual through this experience. However, there are many expenses to this adventure and the national bank of Brianna is quickly running out of funds. I still need to get my vaccines, spending money for food and other essentials, my travel plans confirmed, and my very large study abroad fee paid off. Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated and carefully used. Thank you so much for your help, support, and consideration.
India is made up of many different states. Each state has it's own language, culture, and customs. I will be mostly staying in the State of West Bengal which is close to Bangladesh. Here, the people speak three languages: Hindi (the national language), English, and Bengali.
Here's a picutre of the busy city of Calcutta. In order to get to school, I'm going to have to get creative with transportation.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta has made a huge impact in the city. I will be volunteering at one of her organizations that works with people with mental health problems.
Holi is on Friday, March 6 this year. It is an ancient Hindu holdiday that is known as the festival of colors or the festival of love. On this day, the whole city is shut down and people fill the streets to throw colored powder at each other.
There is an extremely high poverty level in Calcutta because of the Caste system and corruption in government.
