On June 10th, Brian suffered an injury to his brain that caused him to spend eight days in the intensive care unit. Most of that time, he was unresponsive, on a ventilator and receiving around the clock constant medical care. Initially, the medical team treating Brian was unsure if he would wake up and if he did wake up, they were unsure if he would be able to breathe on his own. Being the strong person that Brian is, he has been proving the medical staff wrong every day. Four days in, he began to open his eyes. Seven days in and they were able to take the tube out that was breathing for him. As of today, he has been transferred out of the ICU and on to a regular medical floor in the hospital. He is presently unable to speak and has minimal use of his right arm and leg. He is becoming more aware of his surroundings and is doing things with more purposeful intent than he has in days past. He is still not following commands consistently for the medical team, but if you know Brian, he doens’t take kindly to being told what to do!
He is facing a very long road ahead including rehab with Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. It will likely be months before we know the extent of what abilities he will regain. The one thing that we are all certain of is that life, as Brian knew it, will never be the same. All of the funds that I am able to raise through this campaign will go directly towards Brian’s expenses not covered by his insurance and his medical care going forward. It’s been a roller coaster ride for the last week, and we’ve only just reached the top of the first hill. Your love, support, prayers and positive energy are greatly appreciated during this tough time.
