Bretts Camen Medical expenses!

$1,845 of $6,000 goal

Raised by 33 people in 4 months
Brett Camen is a 16-year-old student athlete at Libby High School, participating in football, basketball and track and field. He is a volunteer referee for Libby Youth Soccer and a promising welding technology student.  Since his father’s death in 2012, Brett has taken on the role of man of his family. He works often and plans a career as a welder.

Brett became ill in November 2017, with major headaches and blurry vision loss. Brett was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebri in December of 2017. This uncommon condition causes an excess of cerebrospinal fluid to build up and put pressure on the brain and spine. The symptoms mimic those of a tumor in the brain. Thus far, damage to his optic nerves has caused Brett to lose his sight. Brett has had three spinal taps, been on medications causing other issues, had surgery to put a shunt in his brain, has numerous visits to doctors and specialists in Kalispell every week, and are now facing traveling out of state with an extended stay to find the cause of this, and try to save his vision. His current doctors have no experience with a case as severe as his and have referred him to a specialist hospital that doesn’t take his insurance. Through it all Brett has kept a hopeful, positive state of mind, and a smile that people never forget.

Brett’s mother is disabled. She is the sole provider for the family and these costs are exhausting her already tight budget.  This amazing young man is a wonderful son, brother, and friend to many, and he deserves the best chance to grow into the man he will be. He deserves the best care available. Please help him to access that care!

I can't thank you all enough for the support you have given my family, it means a great deal to us. Sorry I havent updated things for a bit, as I was busy trying to play catch up on normal everyday life things. Brett made it to Colorado Blind School and is doing well there. He is busy learning many new things to help him become independant as well as being able to finish out his senior year of high school this fall. He will be traveling to Florida next week with the blind school and will be there for a week learning even more. I cant imagine what my son is truly going through but I am super proud of the good spirits he is keeping with everything he is going through, cause I know I don't think I could... He would not be where he is today without the support you all have given him and our family. I will update more soon, we are still doing tests and some test results we don't have back yet.. Love all of you and your support means to world to our family more than I can show you all!!! I will talk to you all again very soon.

Over the weekend Brett decided he wanted to try to be a kid and fell and hurt his ankle pretty bad. He was running down the yard trying to play catch with some friends and the yard was a bit uneven and he rolled his ankle spraining it pretty bad, and put in a walking boot for a couple of weeks to let it rest. We went to seattle this week for an appointment to do more blood work. we will find out in a week or two if he has a clotting disorder, along with another disorder that is inhearitated with gene mutation. As soon as we get those results I will let you all know for sure what is happening. Right now it is going to be lots more appointments doing tests until they can figure out for sure what is happening with his body. This weekend and the begining of next week will be busy for Brett as we try to figure out and get things ready for him to leave tuesday or Wed for Colorado. He is excited and now looking forward to begin his new journey in life being blind... He is such a brave kid and stronger than anyone I know. Thanks again everyone for your support it is greatly appreciated!
He Loves to Visit the ER LOL

. I am truley sorry for not updating sooner, traveling is taking a toll on us... We got lots of questions answered in Utah!! Brett has sever vision loss and will not regain much of it back if any at all.. He has10-20 %vcentral vision in his right eye and 2 little spots in his left eye. Brett developed what they call Killer Syndrome, which is where the pressure was too high for too long in his head and the cells in the optic nerve got irriatted and than just what they call commit "Suicide".. Brett has still some cysts in his retnias that are causing what blurry vision he has and they are not sure how long that will take to go away or if it will at all. At this point for Brett they wont remove the fluid due to it may not help and his vision loss is pretty severe already. Utah is still looking at his images and going to get back to me, they are checking a few other things for Brett and maybe suggest a few more tests for him. They feel that there is a issue possibly in the venus structure of his Brain, which is the arterys and such, but even so they won't do anything with those at this point either as it is a major procedure and he has a V-P shunt in place that will help with that anyway. Brett will be leaving June 8 for a Blind school for the summer and will be gone til August 3. He will get to learn lots of new things and help with daily living with low to no vision.. We are still needing help if any one can and little bit helps greatly. We have to pay out of pocket 3500 for his camp while about 7000 of it is being funded this far. Brett will learn new adaptive equipment to help him finish high school as well as getting around with his blind cane and doing things for himself.... and much more. He has a great attitude about things so far and continues to smile and i am not sure how cause this is all so real now. If anyone can keep us positive it is this kid for sure I love the spirit he has and now he thinks of more ways he can change his future to doing other ways instead of his goal he had before.. Heres to keeping poistive and looking for help to make Summer school possible for Brett so he can go back to his high school and gradutate with his class... THanks again for all the support you have all already given us it means so much to us. Love you all and I will do a bit more detailed update later on today. along with new pictures of Brett!!!
